Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Get the fish tacos ($2.99), they are scrumptious! I got the chile relleno burrito today but not too impressed. The tortillas in all burritos are just amazing!

Great location, kind staff, and food made-to-order. The carne asada fries were good while they were still warm but the fries got soggy quickly and I was hoping they would be a bit crispier, but that's just my personal preference. The portion is good for the price but the carne asada tasted a bit....stale. Definitely had better from here in the past. The fish burrito was a disappointment. The first bite tasted a little off - (ironically) too fishy - but I gave it another go. As I got into it, it was alright, but it seemed like plain frozen fish sticks from the grocery store. When I got to the last few bites, the last fish stick of the burrito was burnt and overcooked. Overall, it was just plain bad and there wasn't enough cream sauce to cover it up. But will I still come here? The location, outside seating, great view, and sometimes good food would probably being me back.

1 star for parking(2 spaces + street parking) 1 star for speed of service. It was a busy holiday weeekend, and they only had one guy "cashiering" 1 star for service. The people seemed "put out" each time I asked for help 5 stars for food, the food was good! 5 stars for location, .. right next to the beach. 4 stars for prices (average)

Came here for breakfast after surfing Del Mar, my surf buddy said is been here for over 50 years (since 1964), so gotta be good if it's been here that long. I got the loaded hash brown burrito; Eggs, sausage, ham bacon, hash browns and cheese. (just under $7) On paper the burrito sounded great, but after the first bite, it was a bit disappointing, all the meats got lost in each other, even the hash brown got a bit lost, i think i got one bite of crunch from the hash browns. I'm pretty sure that they pre make the egg, sausage, ham and bacon mixture ahead of time. The eggs were pretty watery, and there was no crispy pieces of bacon, all signs of it being pre made and held in a warming table. Looking back on the menu, they don't offer a bacon breakfast burrito or a sausage breakfast burrito, despite having the ingredients to make them, all signs that its all a pre made mixture. Im not sure why the restaurant is called "very Mexican" hopefully this is not how its done in Mexico. The salsa was tasty and the service was friendly, i wasn't too impressed with this visit, but I'd return again and give something else another shot, I don't know of too many places in Del Mar that i can go to after surfing in the early morning. Next time fish tacos or carnitas.

It was Monday about 7:30, my back was killing me and my stomach empty after a long fucking day at this conference. I was in a no bullshit kind of mood and my hotel was only a minute away. It was this or the pizza place next door. I opted for the Mexican food, duh. The line was long and only one cashier. The two surfer dudes in front of me wouldn't stop necking and lovingly fondling each other. Ugh, new love is always annoying for other people to watch. So after a nice 20 minute wait, I finally get my turn to order. Hmm...I thought to myself, reluctantly waiting to order like all those annoying people before me. "I'll have the bean and cheese burrito and an order of carne asada fries," I exclaimed. The youngster behind the counter diligently re-called my order aloud. I paid and stepped away. Monitoring my surroundings like a hawk. Sipping my tap water tasting horchata, and watching the traffic go by. It would only be another 20 minutes to get my food. After a solid 40 minute wait, my tolerance level for bullshit was running pretty thin. I deeply regretted coming here, but mostly because the people around me were annoying. At last I was on my way, extra salsa red and green, just wish I had a beer to wash it all down. My first bite was decent. Carne asada fries were just like I remembered the old Roberto's to be. The bean burrito was also good, but loaded with heavy yellow cheese instead of lighter like I asked. The salsa was fucking spicy. Perfect, just the way I like it. Totally surprised by this little place I'm glad their salsa was halfway decent. I'll definitely be back.

So many taco shops in San Diego and this one has a few good things going for them. Number one, and probably the most obvious, location, location, location! They are the first food place you'll come to when leaving the beach so you can imagine the business they must get. They have a really nice outdoor patio and a great view of Torrey Pines. So, apart from that, nothing really special about this taco shop compared to so many others. However, I will say there are a couple of sit down Mexican Restaurants in the same area and the food here is better than the restaurants. Today we stopped in for a quick dinner. We started off with Crispy Chicken Tacos. These are a personal favorite and again, some places do it right and other fail miserably. Here are Roberto's, they do it just right! They are the right size, the shell stays crispy and it's full of delicious chicken meat, just the right amount of lettuce and cheese with a tomato slice dressing the taco. Bean & Cheese burrito, another favorite was pretty good. Real refried beans in a soft flour tortilla with just the right amount of cheese. You can tell the beans are fresh and it's a meal in itself. Last we had a quesadilla with carne asada inside. The meat was good, but they were quite stingy with the cheese. I mean it's a quesadilla! Load up the cheese! We got a side of chips and guacamole. The chips weren't quite fresh. We ate them anyway, but they seemed a few days old. The guacamole is pretty good. We had the red salsa and it was just average. Not very spicy and had a flavor just a little unpleasant. This is an "O.K." place to go for Mexican food, but there are better places not too far away. The other star deduction is for using Styrofoam to-go containers. Gotta get rid of those! Don't tell me it's too expensive because I've checked around and it might cost you 10 cents more and of course you'll just pass that along to the consumer. Get with it Roberto's.... New York City banned all Styrofoam to-go containers this year and believe me when I say you are likely to see it on the ballot in 2016. You cannot recycle Styrofoam in San Diego and being as close to the beach as you are, I would think you would be concerned about protecting our beaches and you know as close to the beach as you are, a lot of your Styrofoam ends up on the beach. Hopefully you are familiar with The Surrider Foundation because they are also pushing this issue and they have started issuing endorsements to restaurants that comply. And, there are companies in San Diego that make the recyclable to-go containers. Again, it won't be long before they are banned so don't wait. Do the right thing and get onboard with this now. By the way....do you really need TWO tip jars at the counter?

One of my go-to Mexican restaurants in the La Jolla area!! So good! We'll priced and good portions. There might be a line on weekends for lunch, but usually moves quickly. Parking is sometimes hard to find, might need to park in the residential area and then walk in.
(4)Michelle R.
The rolled tacos were good but I didn't like the mexican rice.
(3)S G.
We went back to the counter 4 different times to get items we paid for, except the kids drinks.... "I told you, we don't have kids drinks--it was the 1st thing I told you." Comical, until we saw the view of the kitchen.

There is NOTHING like Robertos after hitting the waves. So hungry it hits the spot every time. Always friendly and great food. They have one of those cool soda fountains with a million choices. I enjoy eating my meal and watching the ocean and feeling the sea breeze.
(5)C M.
Used to come here a lot. Was generally good food. But, I've heard that the cooks have changed and the food is mediocre at best, and long line of people lining up outside are just too naive to know any better. I hope he's wrong but it wouldn't surprise me. You'd hope the proprietors would know better. It was a favorite haunt for decades.
(4)Vince L.
The food is OK. it used to be a lot better. But the location is great. The downside is that they don't have a bathroom which to me is bad cause I needed to wash my hands and when I asked they pointed me to the hand sanitizer. I got sick a little later and I can't say for sure it was this place but it was likely.
(3)Tom S.
Carne asada burrito was chewy for some reason then saw them using canned cubed beef. Not sure how that is carne asada. Looked like my doggie's dinner coming out of a can. Chili relleno recipe is also horrible.
(1)Eddie A.
I came here for lunch after someone recommend this location. I came on a Sunday around 1p.m., I was in and out in under 5 minutes (my kind of place). I ordered a California burrito for $5.95. For the quality and price, its not a bad deal. I will definitely be coming back to try other items on the menu. This establishment only offers outside seating. Parking could be a little hectic.
(4)Dianna Z.
This is one oft favorite places in San Diego! When I moved away and then came back to visit, I always made it a point to stop here for their breakfast burritos. I get mine with hash browns and sour cream. So yummy! I also love the California burrito - french fries and carnitas in a tortilla? Yes, please! This location is great too. You can sit outside and look at the beach and the marsh. Sometimes a train will roll by. It's So Cal living at its finest!

I stopped by this Roberto's and tried one of their breakfast burritos. I had them make me one with ham, eggs, cheese, and Mexican salsa. The burrito was of average size and I had with both of their hot sauces ( yelp.com/biz_photos/robe… ). They make the burrito a little differently than most places. The do not chop up the ham and mix it in with the eggs, but rather they put I couple of slices in the burrito and cooked the egg separately. I found that kinds strange ( yelp.com/biz_photos/robe… ). In the end, the burrito was alright, the eggs were a little over cooked on the ends and took on that brown color. The had was good and so was the salsa inside. I did think the burrito needed more cheese. The red hot sauce was good and had a mild kick ( yelp.com/biz_photos/robe… ). Overall, an okay burrito. They have not seating inside, but a patio outside. This place is right near the coast, so during the cold months, I imagine they do a lot of to go orders ( yelp.com/biz_photos/robe… ). With that, service was good...

I hate to leave bad reviews but after several frustrating experiences in the past few months, I feel the need to do so in hopes that the owner will take notice and hopefully improve some things and bring back the Robertos that we used to love. We have been 20 year customers of this Roberto's location and have always been happy with the convenience and the food. However, in recent months we've experienced a major decline in customer service and food portion size. The customer service issues are that at least 6 of the last 10 times we tried to call in an order, they haven't answered the phone. I let in ring for at least a minute or 2 and then hang up and try to call again and still no one answers the phone. On one occasion, I had around 12-13 hungry teenagers and would have placed a very sizeable order but didn't because no one answered the phone so Rudy's got the business. Most of the times that they are not answering the phone is around dinner time between 5pm-7pm. The other evening when again they didn't pick up the phone, I just drove there to place my order. I told the girl working the register and she didn't seem to care. Actually, she was rude and seemed annoyed that I told her about the several times I've tried to call in orders and they didn't answer the phone. Also, I've noticed a considerable difference in the portion size of the burritos. The bean and cheese burritos are about half the size they used to be and the Cali burritos are smaller as well. My last order was a few days ago and on my second attempt of trying to place a phone order, they finally answered just to put me on hold for at least 2-3 minutes. I placed my order of 5 burritos and some rolled tacos and had my husband pick it up on his way home from work. He brought the food home and the order was missing one California burrito. I was so frustrated. I was going to send my son back to pick up the missing burrito but when I called to let them know that we were shorted a burrito, they didn't answer the phone!!! I think we will be taking a break and will take our business elsewhere for awhile!
(2)Emerald P.
Today I'm really upset because I tried to call in my phone order, and they picked up the phone immediately, but managed to forget about me on the phone. It's REALLY annoying when you are on hold and listening to the girl put in orders in and be chummy with customers on the other line. They managed to place me on hold for 6 and half minutes before I just closed the call. I decided to show up at the restaurant because I do love the food, and long and behold there isn't a line! I asked the girl when I got in there if the order app does work because I was on hold for almost 7 minutes. I am not rating this lower because I do love the food, but they need to answer the phone more and not have us wait because we are the frequent customers who live in del mar who know that because it is a big tourist spot, we try to AVOID the crowds by being able to come in, pay, and walk out. And the sauces for people to pour themselves, bad idea. I have seen many times people get splattered on while they are in their business clothes. If they want to do something like that, have the containers where people can push on the handle to pour out. And to top it all off, I managed to find an avocado skin in my guacamole. It's pretty sharp of a skin because it's so thick so they need watch out next time they make it so it doesn't scrape someone's throat next time.

I am not sure how "very Mexican" this place is but I dream about their fish burritos. I have yet to find a place that makes them like Roberto's. The fried fish is not soggy when we get it and the other parts of the filling compliment the fish. I like how they do not stuff this and other burritos with rice and beans like most Nor Cal joints. The carne asada and California burritos are good too. The meat is tender and both kinds of burritos are flavorful. I do like adding the red sauce to each bite though. I'm from the Bay Area so when I visited the SD area, I bought carne asada and California burritos from here before my flight home to show my mom and a couple friends what So Cal burritos are like. Yep, carried them in my purse on the flight. Even after being reheated in a microwave, they still tasted delicious. Parking can suck but since we usually had gone walking around Torrey Pines beforehand, we would just walk here from the park instead of trying to move our car closer. It can be a long walk but I guess you can think of that post-meal walk as compensating for your heavy meal. The eating area outside can be nice when it is not windy and birds are not stalking you. Taking your food to-go would be a good default option since it gets crowded during meal times.

Beach day at Torrey Pines + Burritos from Roberto's = perfect San Diego summer day. Located less than a minute drive away from Torrey Pines State Beach. Just a simple taco shop with outdoor seating, BUT with a beach view! Food: + fish burrito - I think highly of their fish burrito... DELICIOUS house sauce, amazing crunchy texture, fresh pico de gallo. So good. + hot sauce - Their red salsa is fuego and honestly amongst the best taco/burrito sauce I've ever had. + California burrito - had a bite and it was just aight... nothing too special or extraordinary. +small side of guac - looks tiny but was more than enough for 3 of us to share. average. FISH BURRITO AND SAUCE yum!

This place is located in a highly trafficked area with tons of tourist business. Outdoor seating only. Service was adequate, but definitely frazzled during a short busy spell. They were running out of food, as I asked for grilled chicken for a soft taco and they were out. The California Burrito I had was good, though it's tough to mess up. Again, a little light on the ingredients in the burrito. My friends enjoyed their Shredded Chicken Burrito... although there was a critical error: a large bone in the burrito. Large enough to choke on. Having said that, I know it happens..this keeps them out of the 1 star category. Overall the experience and food was underwhelming. A little more attention to detail and these guys could be wrecking shop with that location.
(2)Drew M.
I stumbled across this place after spending time on the beach in La Jolla. Very very very happy with this place. Amazing outdoor seating, especially on a nice day. Able to see the water, and people watch amongst a lively spirited crowd. The food matched the view and was really good! I ordered the carne asada burrito and chicken taco combo, and my date ordered the carne asada nachos. Everything was great, and I know my taco shops. I've been to over 100 since moving to SD and this was top 5 for sure. They also had a Coca-Cola Freestyle machine so I was able to enjoy Vanilla Coke with my meal! Definitely will be paying this place a visit on my next trip to La Jolla!
(5)Jules B.
NOTE: there is no public bathroom/restroom at this restaurant. So avoid all beans and drink liquid minimally. I ordered chips and salsa. Chips weren't too greasy, perfectly salted. Salsa was watery.
(3)Jordan M.
OK, promise this is the last time I'll be updating my review. I came to get their fish burrito today. It was SO GOOD. I'll definitely be asking for extra cream next time.. or maybe a side of cream. The fish itself was flaky, which is perfect, but the breading around it was a little too thick for my liking. I wouldn't drive all the way from home for this fish burrito, because in the south bay there are just as good fish burritos, if not better. But, working across the street, it's probably one of the best fish burritos I've had around here. Price of my burrito was $6.50-ish? I guess that's pretty average, right? I LOVE HELEN!! She works in the morning and she's so nice and friendly. I love going in there just to say hi to her. If you want bunuelos, make sure you get here in the morning otherwise they will all be gone. Also come in the morning because that's when Helen works! I don't know what girl was working there when I went in right now, but she wasn't very lively or happy, but she wasn't unpleasant either. It's nice when you go into a place and can say hi and talk to the people working there.
(4)Lori L.
We had a take out order and waited a long time but was told it was worth it. There were two orders with the same number and we still needed to take food home to family and rush to airport. Got home with food and it was shorted about one third of the food. So, the people we picked up from the airport were hungry too so we headed back to Robertos to correct our order then make another order and were informed that we were mistaken and that the guy who packed our order was positive everything was in our bag. Guess calling customers liars is the new norm. We took the time to come back just to be told we were liars. Horrible customer service! We will make sure everyone we speak to avoids Robertos.
(1)Allen S.
Robertos has a great location and view. But my carne asada burrito was tough, cold and poor value for money. They had no cups for water, and were surly in finding an alternative. The service was borderline hostile. It is too bad this stellar location is wasted on a place I generally avoid.
(1)Ian B.
An interesting name. "Very Mexican food." Regardless, the carne asada fries were lacking a bit. Instead of putting them in an open shell styrofoam box they put it in a divided box (3 partitions to separate food). So I feel like I got much less than I could've. The "kids" quesadilla was generously large, and the soda machine was convenient. The staff was less than amazing. It seemed as though everyone was just ready to close shop. Granted they were pretty busy, but I was greeted with a sign upon every request. Be it for salsa or utensils, they seemed to not care less. All in all, the food was decent, portions could have been a it better for the Adult food vs. the kids food, and the variety in soda was optimal. I would go back, maybe to try a California burrito. But only if I were in the area. Which is rare.
(3)Alice T.
Now that I've experienced a whole lot more burritos, Roberto's is not somewhere I'd go back to. The location is still superb, but the burritos are tiny. They use the big tortilla wraps, but only put ingredients in that take up maybe 1/4 of it. This results in 4+ layers of tortilla when you're eating it, which doesn't meet a satisfying wrap:filling ratio. As for the ingredients, the chicken burrito is still tasty, but the carne asada makes me question the meat quality. There are definitely better quality meats elsewhere. They are so busy all the time, and the staff doesn't seem to care too much about the customers. I ordered a carne asada burrito and a chicken burrito straight off the menu, and for some reason, they could not understand what I was ordering, thinking I wanted a carne asada burrito sub chicken or a #4 combo..?! No apologies or anything for mischarging me, just one of those you're-so-demanding/crazy-lady looks.
(2)Chris L.
I'll begin with this... Do not order the carne asada fries! They should be ashamed! I hope no out-of-towner has ever come here and gotten these for the first time, because they are going to forever think SD carne asada fries are overrated. I occasionally come here for lunch during work (maybe about 20 times to date) and always got a burrito (carne, pollo, california, the usuals). Quick and easy. It's not the best Roberto's in town but it's fair, and on a sunny day, it's got great views of Torrey Pines. Or get it to go and wait for a spot along Torry Pines Rd and watch the surf. So today that was my plan, even though it was cold and overcast at the beach. But instead today I got the fries. I usually do fries as a late night/hangover meal, but I was in the mood. Got it to go and drove all of 3 minutes to a spot to park, and opened the container. The fries were completely soggy. The guac was poured on 1 spot instead of spread all over. There was a ball of carne and cheese in the middle. And call me crazy, but what taco shop serves carne asada fries with a side of beans? This one does! Forget whether I like beans or not, it's not listed on the menu and who does that? I've probably been to 30 taco shops in SD and this was the first time I've seen it. Seriously, if this was the first time I've been here, I wouldn't be coming back and a 1 star would be overrated. Stick to the burritos! I will be back for those, and someday I plan to give the breakfast burritos a shot, but now I'm nervous.

There are so many good Mexican places to go to in San Diego, and this is definitely not at the top of my list. The only reason I go here is because of it's awesome location - not for it's 'Very Mexican Food'. After a day at the beach, this is a great spot to stop at because it's so close. The workers are friendly, people are laid back, and food is decent. Today there was an adorable dog running around the area that had escaped from his home, and one of the employees was sweet enough to give him some food and water. She'd said that the dog was rescued from a shelter, lived nearby and had escaped before. We came here with a large party today and ordered multiple fish tacos, breakfast burritos, rolled tacos, carnitas burritos, and chips & guacamole. The burritos were a lot smaller than I'm used to having at other Mexican places, and had more tortilla than filling (although the tortillas were fresh and delicious). Their chips are just okay, maybe even a little stale, but I did think their portions of guacamole were decent sized. I'm not sure if they do something different to their horchata - but it is SWEET. I've had horchata from many Mexican places before, but this was by far the sweetest even though it appears to come from the same exact dispenser. If you absolutely have to have your horchata when eating Mexican like I do, I would recommend watering it down with extra ice and water.
(3)Priya P.
This is a great lunch spot on weekdays or weekends. California burritos, fish burrito, carne asada fries all great and with a beach side location, you can't go wrong. The seating is only outdoors so come for a sunny San Diego day (so like all the time...). Also on weekends there's usually a line but moves pretty quickly so no worries. Except for one time, their service has been quick and food consistent in quality and of course a good deal. Street parking nearby and pretty dog friendly as there's usually at least one sitting at the tables. Just realized off of some other reviews as maybe another detail: the burritos do not come with rice and beans as this a socal type Mexican joint. The fish burrito which I had for the first time last time was nice because the fish was still crispy fried without getting soggy with sauce and a good size. I wish they had a little bit more sauce but nothing a bit of salsa can't fix. Of course, also love to get the pickled jalapenos and carrots on the side! Next to try the breakfast burrito on one of my morning commutes. I don't know how I've held myself back all this time...
(4)Shauna N.
This was an awesome hang over place. The food was fresh and very good. I ordered the tostada bowl and it tasted like the bowl was just made. It was warm and very filling. The line was long but moved fast. Also the tables outside had great view.
(4)Crystal B.
Great Mexican food and view, just need to order right. I always get a bean and cheese burrito here - don't know why, but they hit the spot!! They are super delicious and the perfect consistency of all ingredients, it really is the best bean and cheese around. Second, the rolled tacos with guacamole on top are also delicious. The guac takes super fresh and the tacos are perfectly crunchy. Go for a walk at Torrey Pines then go pick up the food here - always puts me in a great mood!!!
(4)Melissa C.
Why do I love this place so much? The service is usually pretty terrible - staff always seems detached and bored out of their minds, customers are generally rude (could this be why the staff are completely disinterested in their jobs or the customers?), the tables are invariably filthy, and there are no public restrooms (there is a restroom in the remarkably uncrowded pizza place next door, but they aren't too keen on non customers using it). The facility is inadequate for the amount of business they do - lines snake around outside and trying to navigate the drink machine/salsa/napkin stations are generally frustrating. Trying to find a parking spot can be nightmarish as well. By the time I get my food, I'm asking myself, "Why on earth did I subject myself to this?" And then I take a bite of my chicken taco, and I remember why. Maybe it's how the chicken is cooked to perfection, moist and flavorful. Maybe it's the combination of cheeses (cotija and cheddar) they sprinkle in top. Maybe it's the crispy fried tortilla shell encasing these tasty ingredients, or the little thimbleful of red taco sauce that I dumped over the top. Mmmmmmmm.... My family gets pretty excited when I suggest a meal at Roberto's. My kids love the California burritos, and my hubby usually gets a carne asada burrito and a chicken taco. Sometimes I get an extra bean and cheese burrito to go, because they make a yummy late night snack. I've never left Roberto's hungry or disappointed in the food. And despite the absence of a sanitary place to dine, Roberto's has a primo view of the lagoon, though we usually grab our food and head over to Torrey Pines state beach and enjoy it there. In reality, this place probably doesn't deserve 4 stars for the cons I listed above, but I just can't help myself. I'm hooked. And when I step into that long, tortuously slow line that trails out into the street, I take solace in knowing I'm not the only sucker that keeps coming back for more.

I have one questions...HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO A MEXICAN FOOD RESTAURANT THAT WAS OUT OF CHIPS??? Me neither, until tonight!!! They were out of everything, their phone is out of order, I was surprised that they even had plates and napkins! I feel so bad for the staff working so hard for an owner that can't even do an inventory order, how much money do you think he lost on a Sunday with an out of order soda fountain, no chips, NO CHICKEN, no flour tortillas, and no working phone. I wouldn't be surprised if the staff hasn't received a paycheck in a while, or if this place shuts down. Disappointment the word, oh and for the record, my food was cold so I had to take it home to heat it up. I didn't want to ask them to heat it up for me in fear that their microwave was broken too.....
(1)JR M.
Cannot comment on the food because we never got it. We called at 9:45 (they close at 10) to put in an order and were informed "we can't take an order this late but if you arrive before 10 we will definitely make your order." Wrong. When we arrived at 9:57 we were informed the kitchen was already closed and despite what they promised on the phone, they would not take our order. The people working there were also rude and non-apologetic. There is obviously just a blatant disregard for customer service here. Take your money elsewhere.

Carne asada fries! This place is so close to my apartment that it's my go to spot for when I want to splurge on calories. It is conveniently located to Torrey Pines Beach, so it makes for a great to-go option to eat on the beach, at home, or you can sit down and eat there as there are some tables outside. Make sure you don't sit down on the other side where the pizza place is because they WILL ask you to MOVE right away. The food here isn't the best and it isn't the worst, it just hits the spot. Sometimes the line can get long but they make and package everything pretty fast. My favorite thing here is the carne asada fries. My friends who have gotten burritos think those are pretty solid. I also like that they have horchata, orange bang, Jamaica and that cool machine where you can make your own soda.

I love coming to Roberto's, but this location disappointed I think I might have caught them on a bad day. It was kinda of funny though because this location is not in a very high traffic zone location and virtually has no parking. The funny thing is they get all their business from all the beach walkers and joggers that end their workout down the street. All these health nuts and workout gurus cant resist a nice greasy fat burrito. Their was a constant line of 5 or more people waiting to order while I was there. I waited about 20 mins for my food and had to fight for a place to sit since this location is small with limited seating. What really made me mad about this place and caused me to give them such a low rating was the way they prepared my food. I guess since they were so rushed they didn't take the time to prepare the food with care. I ordered a breakfast carne asada burrito. As I took a bite of my burrito I got nothing but egg which was a little burnt and really really dry. It took me over half the burrito to get to the carne asada. The beef was as bad as the egg. It wasn't seasoned well and the salsa and cheese were almost non existent. I don't think I will be coming back to this place. Its too small and takes way too long for food to come out. There are just as good taco shops around that are faster and push out better food only 4 mins away.

So the food here isn't bad, but it's also not the best taco shop I've ever been to...I mean in San Diego you have LOTS of options for taco shops and this one is just ok. We hiked Torrey pines in the morning so this place was on our way home for lunch. I have to eat gluten free (celiac) and Mexican food is usually pretty easy for me to maneuver. I had the #1 Combo (2 taco plate)...I ordered them both chicken since the fish is battered and fried. The carne asada would've been ok too. Just make sure to ask for them to be soft tacos - otherwise they fry them into hard shells which makes them not gf because they don't have segregated fryers.

so I ordered a meat plate but they gave me a meat burrito I think I order the meat plate but they gave me a meat burrito then when I told him I ordered a meat plate. He said no you ordered I meet burrito well anyways I'm pretty sure I order to meet plate but they gave me I meat burrito he was not rude but I just did not order a meat burrito and he told me I did now I question myself and if I did order I'm eating burrito instead . Also my son said he got a disgusting surprise with sour cream in the burrito and he said it was really better without it

This is my favorite place in the whole wide world!! :) I've been coming to this location since college days. It's good and cheap. Still hits the spot. Three rolled tacos with guacamole and a carne asada taco, that's what I get. Rolled tacos are real shredded beef and good corn tortillas. It really does matter. They're not the lousy frozen taqueria you get most places. I love to drive from LA to San Diego since I get to eat Roberto's.
(5)Kathy B.
Roberto's contacted me and said it is not their policy to treat people as we were treated at the Del Mar location May 9th. They have offered my family a free meal at the Del Mar location. I am happy that they made the offer to reach out to us and we will be taking them up on their offer soon.

I like this Roberto's, however today was a bit of a disappointment. If I'm already planning on getting my next grilled chicken burrito at Rubio's, well this place is really 3.5 stars. I have always ordered bean and cheese burritos in the past and they are so good! Being on a dairy free diet now... Anyway, I'm certain that the dark meat parts were pork. It was tasty pork, but yeah... I know a lot of people don't want to eat pork as I don't want to eat beef (long story). The burrito came as described- with guacamole and salsa fresca. It was bordering on my ultimate spicy limit. It burned going down. But this is probably an awesome spice level for locals and people who didn't just have their gallbladders popped out about 2 months ago.

After a day at the beach it was time for lunch. My friend mentioned that he knew this good Mexican food stand to get some lunch. We all piled in cars and drove over. The options here are fairly limited. Fish, beef, and chicken are your choices for fillers. The menu is also fairly limited with the standard choices of Mexican food. That being said they do a really solid job. I chose the bean and cheese burrito mostly because it was cheap and sounded good. It was quite delicious. I got a second one to split but we added guac to it. Yumm. It took me back to my days in Redlands when I would order Bean Rice and Cheese Burritos with Guac and made them swim in salsa from my favorite Mexican food stand. It wasn't quite as good, but that memory really made me happy. They also have one of those cool choose your coke flavor machines, which really opens the options up for your choices for drink. They don't do homemade horchata (boo) and they use the shredded cheddar cheese for the cheese, but its good low cost Mexican food. The fish taco didn't go over well with my boyfriend either. They seemed to prepare theirs in a very different style than most places. Not the best I've had, but a solid B/B+. I think some more options would help, but it is a solid choice. 39/100

Introduced by a local friend after we hiked Torrey Pines: perfectly located to just stop through the place and enjoy the meal in the sun. The open-sun location, post-walk convenience, very cheap and tasty food, unlimited sodas with the upscale mixed flavor dispenser, and lively popularity all enhance one another to make this a memorable and pleasurable meal. I had the pork tortilla platter, just right portions, not too heavy compared to many "faster food" Mexican corners in town. Great outdoor seating, not much indoor.

Robertos was one of the first Mexican restaurants I visited after I moved to San Diego and all of the locations are consistently good. Surprisingly, this was the first time that I've eaten at this one despite living within five minutes of it for the past three years. The morning after a late night out on the town, my boyfriend was craving a chorizo burrito as a hangover cure. We remembered seeing this Robertos on our drive to the beach and decided to give it a try. It seems to be quite popular as the line stretched out the door about five people long. The restaurant is tiny with just enough room for a couple of people to order at the counters but there's a large patio that overlooks Torrey Pines Beach with plenty of seating. I ordered a California burrito and it was perfect. Carne asada, French fries and cheese all rolled together in a flour tortilla. Mmmmm! It was large enough for two meals for me, which made the $5 price tag even better. Parking can be tough as there are a limited number of parking spots and street parking could be difficult on a nice day since it's so close to the beach. But Robertos is definitely worth checking out.
(4)Dank B.
Roberto's was my favorite Mexican restaurant and made arguably the best California burrito, but it seems that a lot has changed. What I loved about their Cali burrito was that it was delicious, as well as filling. Unfortunately it seems that a lot has changed over recent years: the quality is no longer excellent, but now only sub-par and the humongous burritos which I loved have now been replaced with a cute, mini version. I don't remember what their burritos used to cost, but I'm pretty sure that I paid more for the little excuse of a burrito that I just received than I used to for the burritos that I used to have ample left over. It is due to these changes that I do not believe I will be going back anytime soon as they have cut corners and the quality has suffered.
(2)Jackie V.
We bring all our out of town guests here and Torrey Pines Lodge. Guess where they ask to go their last days? Roberto's. BEWARE....this one is better than the others and the views are great!
(5)Richard M.
The crew on Mother's day were rude and lazy. They would not include chips with some orders because "the night crew didn't make enough small bags". Even though they had plenty on hand and they still charged us full price. We are locals and frequent this place but not anymore. I'm reading about similar experiences and it appears they are hiring losers with bad attitudes. Makes you wonder what's happening in the kitchen.
(1)Joe A.
Roberto's I love your food, you have the best Machaca anywhere. But, when I pay for a burrito I should get one, not one that looks like a rolled taco. This location and Solana beach skimp on the size. Why? Leucadia doesn't. No more bathroom? I had to go next door to Sam's pizza where the guy was a jerk to use the rest room, and make a purchase to do so. He whined that I didn't have cash and charged me an extra 35 cents to run my card. Bad experience. Don't eat here. Go somewhere where you get a better value for your money. San Diego made you rich Roberto, treat us better....
(2)Courtney D.
I am a San Diego local. I have been coming to this Roberto's since I was 16 and now I'm in my 30's. The food used to be soooooo much better. I now live in oceanside and try to stop by on my way back home when I have the opportunity. The last handful of times, the food and overall experience has dwindled. Im not too picky but I do like my food HOT, it was luke warm at best. I always get a California burrito and theres more tortilla than carne asada, fries, cheese and sour cream. Even my 10 year old son said "the burritos used to have more stuff in it!". The meat used to be so well seasoned and tender and now its crunchy and chewy. Im just so sad and disappointed this location has gone down hill :( I will not be eating here anymore

LAME!! Let me briefly explain... So I'm sitting at home waiting for my wife to arrive with some burritos for dinner. As she walks in the door she mentions that she went somewhere new...I wasn't too concerned. Until she pulled these sorry excuses for burritos out of the bag. I got a Cali burrito and it was as small as a taco!! Are you kidding me!! Not only mine but all of ours were crazy small. Nothing is worse then being super hungry, excited to stuff my face with a fat California burrito and being met with this sorry meal. LAME!! Now I need to figure out what I want to eat for dinner since I'm still hungry....SUPER LAME!!!

There is very little inexpensive food in this immediate neighborhood, but Roberto's fills the bill with burritos and such. I've stopped in here a couple of times rather than zip over to the other side of the Five for (ick!) Taco Bell. The chicken burrito is excellent, as is the beef. They do vegetarian as well. Park on the street or their very small lot. Outside seating or take-out only. Warning: The red and green salsas are both very hot!
(4)Ruby E.
Loved my bean and cheese chimichanga !!! I use to work here and i can tell the store is doing better food wise and everything seems more organized! Their beans are amazing! :) i love the employees too always soo nice! Makes me miss working with them... If only someone can do something about corporates employees they have such rude ways.
(5)Hollie B.
My coworkers and I came here. It was my first and will be my last visit. We ordered ahead of time. My coworkers usually pre-order and walk up and get the food. This time they told us we had to get in line to pay. We could see our food sitting there in the window. We got up to pay and asked they lady why we had to wait when we called it in. She said she was just following the new rules. When we got our food it was cold (we were #14 and they were on #50 & we don't work that far away). It was also very bland. My workers said this was the worst service and food they have had here. We will never come back here. Terrible.
(1)Joe C.
I ordered 3 items. All 3 came in giant separate non-recyclable styrofoam containers... And that was not a to go order. They would have thrown in a plastic bag too if it was to go. Seriously, it was an annoying waste. Not to mention my food smells like hot greasy styrofoam. How about 2 items in 1 giant foam container? Or paper for a quesadilla? Or even better, try something recyclable. Is it so hard?
(2)Angel C.
Although they don't have many items on their menu, what they do serve is very good. Parking may be a problem at times, and they have out door seating only. So, on the rare occasions it does rain, or it's too cold, you'll just have to take your order to go. My only problem, and it's major for me, is that this place isn't open late. If you go out to the bars and feel like eating Mexican food, as most people do after drinking, you're out of luck if you want to go here...which is too bad because I really like this place.

Every time I come to Torrey Pines State Beach, I always pass this Roberto's location. Maybe it's because of the times I'm heading to the beach, but it seemed like the place was packed with customers and diners whenever I drove by. I finally got a chance to try Roberto's on my most recent trip to the beach a few days ago. Two things struck me immediately: how small the restaurant was, and how small the menu was. While the staples of most taco/burrito stores were present - rolled tacos, carne asada chips/fries, California/carne asada burritos - I was hoping for more variety in the menu based on my experiences in SD. I was also surprised at how small the carne asada burrito was... compared to my usual joints, this was puny. Plus, the guacamole was more toward the middle of the burrito, as opposed to spread out so I could taste it with every bite. At least the service was fast, the carne asada was relatively fresh, and hey, it IS close to Torrey Pines State Beach after all. Despite the relatively limited menu (and the somewhat rude, entitled - and dare I say it, middle-aged white folks that were frequenting the place during my visit), I can see myself getting an order of carne asada chips to munch on whenever I travel to the beach.

Decent. Great location right by the beach. Small little place with a limited seating. The chicken taco was good. the chicken was shredded and a bit dry. The tortilla was fried to a crisp. yum. The fish taco was good. The fish was nice and crisp and cooked perfectly. I couldn't taste the white sauce on it however. Would have been great with more sauce. The combo plates have tiny portions of rice / beans and chips. The chips were a bit stale and the in the bag were only crumbs. WTF? booooo. The fish burrito was pretty tasty. nice pieces of crisp white fish and a nice creamy sauce with the cabbage. Fresh, delicious flour tortilla. yum. They have 3 types of hot sauce available: red or green. No salsa bar or chunky salsa here. bummer. Average, decent place in a great convenient location.
(3)Gray B.
I love beans, and their beans are totally tasteless. In fact, the food is generally tasteless, and I've eaten here many times, so I know I didn't just hit this place on a bad day. If you're in the area, spend a few more minutes to go to Rudy's in Solana Beach and grab a grilled shrimp burrito. Well worth the time.
(2)NYSD G.
we ate here many years ago and didn't like the food but left thinking it might be cause of what we ordered. we've been meaning to try it again because we like the view. it seemed what we should've ordered the first time was their beef taco plate because of what people were eating. so we knew what to try the second go, but after seeing the cook take meat from a clear baggie from the microwave didn't help. strike two. first bite of the beef taco, it wasn't what we ordered, its just bad mexican food. strike three. it has to be the view why they're busy and still open, but also the lack of mexican options in the area. what a shame...the owner would be better off if they closed and charged people to bring take out from another place.

I remember coming here when it was still a run down looking shack , back then the burritos were cheaper and A LOT bigger. Oh how the times have changed , I'm glad that there business thrived and they were able to upgrade however each year the food seemed to decline and the prices rose. After a nice long walk on torry pines I decided to stop and get a burrito today. Got the crane asada burrito ( think it was around $5) . When I got my food THERE WAS ALMOST NO MEAT!!!! Most of it was tortilla that wasn't wrapping anything, isn't that the point of a burrito? Ugh I'm so disappointed in you Roberto's please start adding more meat to your burritos so I don't have to feed most of my tortilla to the birds on your patio.
(2)Ashli R.
Delicious. California burrito with guacamole. Fantastic place to go before or after a day at the beach! A must.
(4)Katalyst S.
Love stopping in here on my way to or from the beach. Always hits the spot! Not the best or worst burrito in San Diego but it's always good and always close by on my drives to either del mar or torrey pines. Even when I was in college I would come out here to get a normal burrito since my campus only had Rubios at the time and none of the nearby places were hole-in-the-wall style mexican food. This is the kind of mexican food I prefer. Parking is street and a small lot but I always find it so it's not a deal-breaker. This place is usually pretty busy though so sometimes it takes a little bit to get your order.
(4)Aneesh B.
Roberto's is great. Beach-side eats at a great price. Food: I've had the California burrito, the rolled tacos, and the chicken mini-tacos (which are not so mini). My favorite are the chicken mini-tacos, with the #4 combo (taco + burrito, which is a whole lot of food) a close second. Meats were well-seasoned, salsas were really flavorful, and food was not greasy on multiple visits. Service: Counter service, easy and no fuss. Vibe: Everyone comes to Roberto's, and it's the perfect spot for a meal after a day at the beach, a walk to the beach, a drive by the beach, or even when your day has had nothing to do with the beach. Family-friendly: As stated above, everyone comes to Roberto's. By all means, bring as much family as you like. Summary: Eat here now! You'll love it! And the silver lining if you don't is that it's California, and you have hundreds of other taco and burrito shops from which to choose...

I thought I'd be nice and give them 3 stars for the low prices and great location. I just finished doing 13 miles at the TP Reserve so I was starving. Thought I'd finally check this place out considering its always packed. I could see the appeal of this little taqueria located in this beautiful and mostly white neighborhood but the food was nothing great. I ordered the Carñe Asáda torta with everything but it did not come with cream. Didn't fuss about it because I didn't need the extra calories. As for the Carñe, it looked and tasted like it was boiled in water not grilled. Put enough salsa on it and it was not so bad. Maybe I didn't order their signature dish but how do you mess up a torta? Its just a hamburger! This place could use a face lift and a larger kitchen. And theSe high school kids should be trained on efficiency a lil more. All in all this place just proves my theory on Mexican restaurants in white neighborhoods, no matter how bad the food is, they will still love it.
(3)A R.
What happened??? No more shrimp burritos! These were the most delicious burritos with chipotle sauce. Something about fluctuating market prices not making them profitable. I would be prepared to pay more, they were that good. My husband has always enjoyed the fish burritos. Today the fish was fried so much that it was hard and difficult to bite off (not good in a burrito!). The employees are nice and made another burrito but unfortunately it wasn't much better. Has the ownership changed? Nothing seems the same :(
(2)Elizabeth J.
Alright, I definitely have to give Roberto's 4 stars because it's a great place to go right after the beach to get some good tacos or burritos. The food is authentic, the chicken tacos are AMAZING, I love going there after visiting Torrey Pines beach for the day, definitely a fun and good place to go. The seating outside is nice to enjoy with the view of the beach in the distance. Definitely worth a try if you've never been! The inside could be a little more big & cleaner, maybe.. But they have people coming in and out of there all day long from the beach so what do you expect? They make great tacos lol!!
(4)Mark S.
A longtime guilty pleasure is their rolled tacos with guacamole. Love 'em. The machaca burrito is also good. My one complaint is that they apparently fry their tacos whole with meat in (if they don't I can't imagine how they're so greasy). Wish they did the shells then stuffed the meat. Las Quatros Milpas in Barrio Logan should be the universal taco model.
(3)David L.
Roberto's carnitas burrito, once among the best in San Diego, has fallen to below ordinary. They've removed most of the carnitas and guac, and added beans and fillers. I might as well have gone to Taco Bell. Sad because Roberto's had been my go- to place for Mexican food for more than 20 yrs.
(1)Amanda D.
Yummy taco salad!
(4)Meg D.
Probably the BEST fish burrito you will ever have in you life unless you make it to Mexico... I can't just eat one I have to have two. I'm from L.A and I thought I knew good Mexican food, a great Carne Asada burrito for sure!!! Boy oh boy was I so wrong until I was introduced to Robertos! Every time I'm in SD I have to stop here. In don't know why people have complained about the fish burrito being "too fishy"... Um it's a freakin fish burrito for goodness sake! If you add extra sauce it's perfect! Oh yeah they have outdoor seating so if you have kids or pets, you should be fine. The only drawback is that parking can suck balls sometimes.
(5)Don F.
Outstanding tacos and a view the marsh heading to the beach. Be prepared to eat outside, that's all available.
(4)Elizabeth P.
This is my go-to spot for carne asada fries after a gorgeous hike at the Torrey Pines Reserve. One order of carne asada fries is enough to split between two people, so this is a great deal. Parking is on the street, so be prepared to parallel.
(5)Kim M.
First, can't beat the view of Torrey Pines! Second, if you're coming from the beach, it's the perfect stop. Food, just okay, so don't get too excited.
(3)Livy O.
Only tried the California burrito, but the carne asada was awesome. Seasoned and high quality. Added guac and they weren't skimpy. Burrito itself was kind of cold when I got it and the cheese wasn't melted (during lunch rush) but all is forgiven cuz the overall flavor was great. Also a good sign when you pull up to the place and you can smell delicious-ness right when you get out of your car, wafting into your face.
(4)Michelle S.
Always delicious.. Everything is sooooo yummy, we drive 20 miles out of the way to eat here again before leaving San diego. It's a great location with people waiting in a line down the street, but they serve you very fast. You will live it.
(4)Susan B.
Overall this place is great for a taco shop. Rolled tacos are delicious and so are the regular tacos. Not a huge fan of their California burrito, I find other places are better. It's a cool location but can get pretty darn busy especially at lunch time
(4)Joanne B.
I will drive double the distance from the nearest taco shop closest to our home to Roberto's Very Mexican Food joint because their food is legit. We had our second round of good old Mexican food here on Saturday night when our original plans got diverted to something more chill. I would go here for their rolled tacos with guacamole. They taste just like the ones I grew up with in the South Bay when I had my first rolled tacos at the OG Roberto's taco shop on Broadway & H in Chula Vista that's still around many decades later. They have the perfect crunch, they're not overcooked and the taco isn't smothered in guacamole (and the additional sour cream we order with it) where it's a soggy mess when we get home to take our first bite. The carne asada fries are $5.99 and it's served in a container with the dividers with a side of refried beans off to the side of one of the smaller dividers in the container. Portion-wise of this order is not overwhelming, but some might find it not worth buying. I personally think it's perfect to share this with five rolled tacos and get full, but not stuffed. Their menu is somewhat limited compared to the wall of options at the other taco stands in the South Bay, but I'm all about quality over quantity. We tried their enchiladas on our last visit and they were good, but we'll probably stick to the rolled tacos and carne asada fries going forward. I have yet to try a carne asada burrito, maybe that'll be next. It's a small joint where you order at the counter, help yourself to the pre-packaged red and green hot sauce and serve your own fountain soda as you sit outside overlooking the ocean view from a near distance as the Coaster and Amtrak trains cruise by. Overall, Roberto's is a good spot where it's very clean and customer service is five stars. You'll probably find us here to grab a quick and tasteful dinner when we don't feel like cooking at home. Thanks for being a mere 2.4 miles away from home, you're as good as it gets for taco shops in Carmel Valley!
(4)Brandon R.
Probably the most overrated Mexican food anywhere. This definitely should be your last option for food. Greasy, not great quality.
(2)Erin R.
AWESOME. Fish tacos are sooooo good, and the carne is amazing. Really nice spot to grab lunch outdoors, friendly service.
(5)Peijean T.
You know the secret blend of 11 herbs and spices that go into Kentucky Fried Chicken? My tongue tells me Roberto's must use a similar recipe, because the carne asada tastes uniquely bold and flavorful, almost like KFC to me -- in the right kind of way.
(4)Evelyn C.
Very disappointed to have wasted money at this place. The food was terrible (and I have eaten at a lot of Mexican restaurants). My carne asada burrito had so much pepper in it I couldn't enjoy it! Not that it was spicy, it was the overwhelming flavor of the pepper and the dryness of the meat that was just terrible! I also bought a cheese quesadilla... Went straight to the trash! Oh I almost forgot, I also got rolled tacos, that's the only plate I cant complain about, but its not hard to like fried food, its a no brainer! Service was just ok, and I waited about 10-15 minutes for the food. I don't mind waiting for good food... This was not good at all. Wasted money and time! Won't be buying from this place ever again.
(2)Claudia G.
First time there. Pretty good! I ordered the #2 combo which was two tacos of your choice. I had 1 fish and 1 beef. They were both good but the beef was better. The fish was a bit too fishy and over cooked for me. But i would go back for sure!
(4)Mark W.
Wow, what has happened to Roberto's. We have eaten there for years and loved it. Over the last couple of months, the food has changed for the worse. We used to love their burritos and now they are greasey and lack flavor. Please, I want my old Robertos back. I guess I will have to look elsewhere for my burrito on the beach.
(1)John M.
Go here if you like a bready burrito. I'm not impressed with this location. The portions are small for the price. I paid over $6 for the hashbrown burrito and while it tasted okay it was small. Small burritos = lots of tortilla... the red hot sauce was underwhelming... lots of other options for the same price and larger portions.. Read the other reviews - "small portions, tiny, taco sized burritos" if it wasn't for their location, I don't think they'd be as popular... kotija jr on del mar heights is much better in taste quality and portion size. One star for skimpy food, one more star for location. No thanks - never again.
(2)R J.
My boyfriend and I frequent this location after our weekend beach hikes at Torrey Pines. Unfortunately our most recent visit to this Roberto's will be our last. There has been a steady decline in their food quality over the past few months and then we received the most HORRENDOUS customer service on our last visit. We stopped in for a couple of burritos on Sunday afternoon. The drink machine was out of order (again) , they were out of salsa, all of the tables were FILTHY and we had to clean one ourselves to sit down and eat. We would have asked an employee to wipe down a table for us but the only one available was the NASTY woman taking orders at the register. I sincerely hope she wasn't the manager. I kind of got the idea that she was since the rest of the employees were wearing red shirts and hers was black. I regret not getting her name. She was an overweight Hispanic girl who seemed very unhappy to be working there and she was taking it out on all of her customers. First we had to listen to her "bark" out order numbers, obviously annoyed when patrons didn't run over to the window and pick up their food fast enough. She was on the phone when my boyfriend walked up to the counter to order and seemed annoyed to see him standing there. When she finally hung up she rudely asked "did you order yet?" Why did she think he was standing there? She couldn't be bothered to offer a greeting, let alone force a smile onto her miserable face. To top it all off they got my order wrong and did not put guacamole in my burrito as requested. Which ordinarily wouldn't have been a big deal at all. When I approached the counter to let her know she asked if I wanted it on the side or if I wanted it inside my burrito. I politely requested it be put into the burrito and she says "its the same thing if I just put it on the side!" (really? then why did you give me the option? Furthermore, if I wanted it on the side I would have asked for a "side" of guac to begin with) Before I could say anything she turned around, slammed my burrito into the trashcan and started yelling at the cook to remake it. This is completely unacceptable and disgusting service. People like this should not be working with the public in any capacity. If this woman is in fact a member of management then the owners really need to re evaluate their operation and those they are allowing to be the "face" of their business. You've lost two loyal customers!
(1)Brian B.
Got the taco and burrito combo plate, good call. Awesome fish taco and the asada burrito, solid meal with decent portions for a good price

Roberto's Del Mar is great ! It's been there since the 80's for a reason, cheaper Mexican food by the beach, of course it's a little more $, it's in Del Mar ! Food is great, that old man is gone, and I like the servers they're very nice,....This place is packed and slammed a lot , going there for a long time it's comical how picky the Del Marsians and visitors can be lol,,,,lots of crazy add ons and modifications, with the line 20 deep out the door !! It's a cheap fast paced hole in the wall SD Mexican restaurant for God sakes !!...Go to Whole Foods or Donovan's Steak House if you want no lard and high quality carne ! lol....Location, service, food all great....Roberto's Del Mar is on point for good cheap SD Mexican food by the beach....not on point for low calorie vegan light tofu tacos or tri tip mahi mahi burritos lol.... It does what it's there for very well !

California burrito, how I crave you. Heard this place is busy and for good reason. Their burrito was delicious. I also like how they already have portioned out sauces in containers for you to just take. Efficient. Luckily when we went around 6:30 pm, it wasn't packed. We had just missed the rush. Only downside, they only have outside seating so it was a bit cold when we ate there.

Really gone down hill in last few months. At peak hour dinner time they only have one person on the register, so the line is 20min ++. They should pay another $40 for one more employee for evenings, as customers are very frustrated with the long wait. Take out orders now take forever over the phone, and once you are there you have to line up all over again just to pay. Kids meals are now missing both jello and chips. Very disappointed as this has been our favorite take out mexican food for 25 years.

Not impressed, AT ALL! For a place located by the beach, with beautiful weather and a nice view . . . its a bummer! The Carne Asada burrito was bland, dry and not impressive. I added hot sauce to it and managed to somewhat save my $4.99 undersized burrito. I tried this place a second time, this time I had the fish tacos, still not impressed. The food was dry and cold without much to it but some sauce and lettuce. For a place that has a sign out front that reads "Very Mexican Food", not authentic, not tasty and VERY disappointing. The only reason I gave it two stars instead of one is because of it's location. For something authentic and about 15min south, try JV's Mexican Food down on Morena Blvd.

Woo wee! I took my parents for a stroll around Torrey Pines when they were here for Christmas, and afterwards, we were looking for a place to grab a bite. I remembered that this place was just up the way, so we stopped in. The line was WAY out the door, but they were moving quick! We managed to snag a table for 3 after ordering and enjoyed the sun as we ate our California burrito, carne asada fries and fish taco. (Yes, had to make them order all the San Diego specials!) All were just what you would expect. No indoor seating as I recall. A rather nice patio area with outdoor seating. Always seems to be popular, but I've always managed to snag a seat. I'd recommend if you are in the area and want some Mexican food.

We drove out to Del Mar for Robertos because they were one of the only people who accepted a restaurant gift card we had received years ago, and just now decided to use up. I called to ask what time they closed, and the guy that answered the phone said "Huh...?" "What....?" "Huh....?" a few times before finally figuring out how to answer my brainbuster question. When we showed up, I asked the lady behind the counter what was in their Fish Burrito and her response was .... "Huh..?" (she must be related to the dude that answered the phone!). After a minute, she gave me a run down of what was in the Fish Burrito. My Fish Burrito was very fishy (which is ok for me - but wouldn't fly for people who are not a fan of strong flavored fish). The fish was also heavily breaded and fried - perhaps the most fried fish I've had in a fish burrito thus far. The "fish sauce" was a very dill-centric tarter sauce. Very underwhelming. The hot carrots we ordered were super soggy. The bf's said his carne asada burrito was "ok," and "fine since we paid with a gift card." ....yup. That pretty much sums it up.
(2)Nikhil B.
Food was mediocre and the people at the front had no idea about details of the menu. Siting area was not clean at all. Really disappointed!
(1)Taylor C.
It can be difficult at rush hour because this place is close to the beach and popular with tourists eating up our delicious food, but this is still a great place. We visit about twice a month.
(4)Mary S.
I eat here. A lot. Of course it's closer to my bed than the fridge - but that's beside the point. California burritos repeatedly restore my faith in humanity. Oh, but be patient getting your beverage. Apparently 99% of the population is completely incapable of using the new digital fountains.
(5)James H.
Surprising for Del Mar! Great value and very good Mexican food.
(4)Maria C.
I've been told that the hash brown burritos here are bomb, so decided to see for myself what this business is all about. Enclosed in the hash brown burrito are the following: bacon, eggs, cheese, and hash browns. Because I don't care for bacon mixed into my food, I requested carne asada. From what I was told, they don't customize the h.s. burrito as it was already pre-mixed. However, when I received my order, I got carne asada! YAY, but UGH communication! Portion was small. I actually ate the whole burrito in one sitting, whereas I normally don't and typically have to take half a burrito home. I've visited this Roberto's before, and I like its convenience of how you can grab and go to the nearby beach. Street parking avail with a limited amount of outdoor tables should you decide to dine here. Wasn't impressed with this "h.s. burrito". I'd defer to a Cali Burrito next time - at least it comes with guac.
(3)Shannon S.
This place is really cheap with nice view! My colleagues and I come here often for lunch. My favorite is fish burrito. If you don't know what to eat if you just come here for the first time, I recommend you to try that!
(5)Stephen T.
Tonight I came here with my family, we never received our food. We arrived at 6:30 it is now 7:25 and we are leaving. Our order was not very complicated. The workers seemed to be in no rush what so ever. During the time that we sat there they took about 10 orders in 5 minutes and no food came out to anyone! When we asked about our order they had lost it. In the past I have come here and the food came out very quickly however Roberto's has seem to have lost their charm: fast, good Mexican food. I think not!!!! I believe Nico's taco shop a few miles east is much better
(1)Cassie G.
Phone off the hook??? I've been a steady Roberto's patron since before I could talk (1979), and still maintain that their food is the best. However, seems they have lately been keeping their phone off the hook at different points throughout the day?? I would like to place an order so that I don't have to wait as long for my order, please. Keeping your phone off the hook when you're busy is unprofessional and lame. Best California burrito around, but keep it up and I will find somewhere else to spend my money. Thanks.
(3)Cliff B.
Have been coming in here for years but in the past year it has gone downhill. The food is not what is used to be, carne is dry and flavorless, fish tacos are overcooked as well. Boring food at high taco shop prices. The location is great especially after the beach or need some quick food but even the "quick" part has gone away. Last 3 times I have gone here it has taken way too long after you order to actually get your food. Tonight it wasn't even busy and it took about 20 minutes for our order to come out. I don't know what happened but it used to be so quick and now it is just super slow. Probably won't be back, need to find a new place.
(2)Spencer A.
a favorite spot for some time..but no more. under staffed, it took 40 minutes to get 2 Cali burritos and they were the worst ones we've ever had.. burnt fries and cold meat. sister got a quesadilla that was dripping with grease and had a tomato produce sticker burrowed within the 'dilla. With much better spots around, Robertos is quickly dropping to a tier 3 Mexi joint.
(2)Tiffany X.
I've come to Roberto's many times because of its close proximity. The quality of the food is pretty inconsistent. I've had the California burrito countless times and half the time the burritos were skinny and was basically 30% tortilla. However you can never go wrong with one of their breakfast burritos, especially the hashbrown. Im giving this place only 2 stars because I had they world's worst quesadilla. They served the chicken quesadilla uncut do I had a giant greasy flap lying in front of me. There was only chicken and cheese in the center part of the quesadilla and grease was pouring out from all sides. Needless to say I will not be coming to Roberto's unless I having nothing to eat at home.
(2)Chad H.
if you feel naughty, get the quesacali burrito. ughhhhhh so goooooddd
(4)Mandy L.
Roberto's is a very basic, delicious Mexican joint near Torry Pines Beach. They have a patio over looking the marshy area, and a very very small parking lot (plan to street park). There is no indoor dining, and the inside is very small, just the ordering cashier station and the drink station. We ordered a burrito and carne asada fries and it took about 15 minutes to get our order. It wasn't crazy busy, but there were other people around. The food was great, large portions, salsa cups on the side and all that yummy stuff. I wish there was a salsa bar, but the space is just over mobile taco truck that it there simply isn't enough room for it. While the food and service was good, the patio was very dirty. All of the tables were dirty, and there was trash on the ground.
(3)Rachael R.
It was just good. No bathroom. Staff was nice and there is a cute outside area. Nice cheat snack after Torrey Pines. The chicken burrito was very good also the red sauce is very good. It didn't push the have to come back button though.
(3)Peng X.
This was my first time having a California Burrito and I must say it hits the spot. Definitely give it a try even if you're not a fan of burritos normally. This is a great place to eat after hiking Torrey Pines.
(5)Z E.
Good, cheap Mexican food while looking at Torrey Pines and the Ocean? Mmm, yes. Sounds good to me. I'm pretty boring, so I usually get the bean and cheese burrito. For $3, it's a very filling meal and I get to look out at some very beautiful scenery. The California burrito is pretty good too. In fact, I can guarantee that for less than $10 you'll have a good meal and an awesome view. That gets a 5 star from me everytime.
(5)Dan B.
Ode to the hash brown burrito!! Breakfast burritos and the quest to make my gut huge! Breakfast burritos so yummy and good... Introduce ham, bacon, and hash browns. And the quest is almost complete.. Penis being eclipsed by belly and sweat dripping while trying to put on my shoes.. Thank you Roberto's for making me the man I am today!
(4)Chris H.
A San Diego institution for 30+ years. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Roberto's takes the cake in San Diego... nowadays, it seems like every fast food Mexican restaurant in town has copied Roberto's recipes (ie many specialty taco/burritos in San Diego now have the same mix of ingredients as the Roberto's originals... this wasn't the case 15 years ago)... A "must" for anyone seeking the quintessential SoCal Mexican beach meal.
(5)Dana M.
Our favorite go-to burrito stop when we're looking for something simple and tasty. I get bean and cheese and my boyfriend gets the Lite (with cheese). Hot sauce is solid, horchata is as well. My friends seem to dig the carne asada burritos and tacos too, so it's easy to go veg or carn here and have all parties leave satisfied. They have a simple menu though, so make sure online before you go that everyone is ok with what's on. Picturesque views outside as it's right across from the state park at Torrey Pines, and easy to go drive/walk/bike to the beach from there with burrito in hand. Mmm!
(3)J P.
Barely 1 Star. We waited in line for 10 minutes to order - cool with that. But totally disorganized. Holiday weekend, last day of summer before school starts and they were clearly understaffed (1 order taker, 1 cook, 1 guy washing dishes [?], 1 guy counting money [??!!]) It took 35 minutes for our friends to get their food. Food was good, but portion sizes small. Biggest complaint, though, is that they don't allow even paying customers to use the restrooms. When you're waiting that long to get your food with six pre-teens and teens, that's unacceptable. Several desperate customers asked to use the restroom and were turned down. Isn't this a health department violation? After 45 minutes, and after the order taker admitted they hadn't even started our order, we got our money back and left. What a disappointment!
(1)Jay C.
My Mexican happy place, simple easy menu that hits the spot every time. Shrimp or Chicken burrito every time, 4 red salsa's to light the fire and I'm off and running!
(4)Une F.
We like to come here after we go hiking at Torrey Pines state reserve / beach. Food is good here, and they have free refills of soft drinks on a digital soft drink machine or horchata. Outdoor seating. Parking lot is small so you can park up the street
(5)Kyle J.
This place is awesome! The food is great and always satisfies. Portions are huge, and the ingredients taste very fresh. I normally get the hashbrown, california, or lifegaurd burrito. Staff is friendly, but occasionally it takes a bit long to get your order. The only downside to this place is all outdoor seating. Not a good place to come if the weather conditions are poor. Other than that, excellent food! UPDATE: Since I started coming here nearly 2 years ago, in the past few months the food quality and quantity has greatly decreased. I've noticed this decline over the few visits to this establishment. They no longer include vital ingredients in some of their burritos (ex: Guac in Cali burrito, breakfast sausage in hashbrown burrito). This was a huge disappoint, because I held this place to very high standards as you can see from the previous review. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be returning soon.
(2)Cindi B.
I LOVE Roberto's in Del Mar. Best CABs around (Carne Asada Burrito). I love everything they serve. If you are counting calories, try the shredded beef or chicken burrito. They are both under 300 kcal, but very filling and yummy.
(5)Rania B.
My family and I came here hungry, but apparently they said the food would be ready in an hour's wait, so they refused to serve us. Seriously?! The place was practically empty. If there was an option to give this location 0 stars, I'd give them it.
(1)Britnee B.
Yuck! After seeing all of the reviews, we had high hopes, but our food was a total let down. The fish tacos, California burrito, and even the rice, beans, and salsa were way below average! Service and prices were fine, but we are not going back!
(1)Jessie R.
I love Roberto's. The food is amazing, the location is awesome, and I always get my food quickly! When I moved to the east coast the one place I missed more than anything was food from Roberto's. It's the best/most authentic Mexican food I've ever had and I'll never tire of it. I love sitting on the patio with a view of the lagoon, train tracks, Torrey Pines Reserve, and the ocean. I've been going to Roberto's for as long as I can remember. They have been in business for a long time and my family always got take out from here when I was young. A couple tricks - call and order your food ahead of time. At the rush they have a separate line for Pick-Up orders, and then you can walk to the beach and enjoy your burrito, sitting on the sand with an ocean breeze. If you don't call ahead, you might have to wait in line, but the line goes pretty quickly and then your food is made within 10 minutes (tops! usually more like 2-5 minutes). I love spicy things so I often pick up a red and/or green sauce to go with my food. My favorite thing to order is the "Lite Burrito" (I'm a vegetarian - it has rice, pinto beans (NOT refried beans), salsa, and delicious guacamole) and I get it every time I go (which can be several times a week when I'm in town). My friends love the California Burrito and my brother always gets the basic Bean and Cheese, and my parents love the enchiladas. Of course they've had to raise their prices recently, but still dirt cheap! I'm so jealous of the people working in businesses right by - talk about lunch everyday! Go to Roberto's! You won't regret it, and if you don't go, you don't know what you are missing!!
(5)Natasha A.
The fish burrito I had was AWESOME, the sauce on the side was amazing. Why such few stars? Well, if the food hadn't been so good I'd give it 1. Not only are the workers really cold, the other customers are incredibly rude. When I was there it seemed like mostly other locals, but Del Mar type, middle-aged, white locals. Standing in front of the napkin holder while waiting for food, an older couple who'd been mean mugging us for some reason (?) reached behind me to get a napkin, and brushed my side. I jumped, going, "ee! whoops, sorry!" They said nothing. No excuse me, no sorry, nothing. Would have liked to punch them in the face right then and there. When we were pulling up and got lucky enough to park in one of the 2 spots outside Roberto's this guy walks out, eating his food like he hasn't eaten in 2 weeks, staring me right in the eye as he strolls leisurely through the spot and across the street so that my car's back end is clearly blocking traffic on the main road. This seems pretty typical of San Diego locals, especially this area, and I'm getting really tired of it. Oh, and the outdoor eating area looked quite unsavory. No desire to go back. I'll be going to Cotijas where the fish burritos are just as good, but they have a drive-thru, relatively friendlier staff and no snobbish patrons.
(2)Heather W.
in the break of our typical may gray...san diego threw us a bone with a sunny day today. most would have rather had the sunshine on the weekend, but today is my birthday so im happy about it :) and given the drive over to roberto's is along the beautiful costal road next to the torrey pines reserve, it is always a much more appealing journey on a nice day. so i tried something else today...a combo plate of crunchy chicken taco and cheese enchilada. i was hoping they would honor a *wee bit* expired coupon form their site (didnt even realize the date till after printing) but no. so though this is the typical taco shop food of good greasy satisfaction, i paid nearly $10 for my plate and horchata (drink is not included in combo btw - only refried beans, rice and chips). eh..still not impressed really. yes yes, i still need to try this hash brown burrito but its hard to be in the mood for that during lunch time.
(3)Joe F.
Can be a five star joint. Can also be a one. It all depends on what time of day you come. Come anywhere a normal meal time and you'll find the food fresh and made to order. Come at a more obscure hour and it will likely be stuff that's been sitting under the heat lamp for way longer than they'd like to admit. 530 is prime. Before the rush but right when they've kicked up the stove for dinner.
(4)J S.
What happened to this place? Bean burrito with 4 tbs of beans? Nasty burning smell from the kitchen and no Mexican guys working there. Friday night and not busy..pissed off customers waiting forever for their food? This place used to rock with good food, fast service and a good vibe. Perfect location but it looks like somebody screwed it up! Don't bother going here.
(1)Dave P.
Tonight, I had my last Roberto's burrito ever. Service has declined, portion to the price is insulting and the flavor left with it. 7:45 on a Sunday night should be a time when they are begging people to come in for a bite. The fancy soda dispenser registered that most favors were empty. I would recommend Taco Bell over this old favorite. Same quality of food and 80% cheaper. The "glory days of Roberto's" is well behind them. They are now using a central kitchen and shipping the food out to the stores for reheating vs on-site cooking. I wish I could give negative stars.
(1)Bret L.
Food: Great. Location: Great. Everything else: Meh. My girlfriend and I live close to this location and stopped in on a lazy Saturday afternoon. I ordered a quesadilla. The restaurant wasn't busy by any means but it did take about 15 minutes to get our food. We sat outside to enjoy the view of the marsh. The patio area trash cans needed emptying and there was some litter on the ground. As I said, the food was delicious. The steak was tender and flavorful and the salsa was delicious. The price was decent as well. Not overly cheap but certainly not expensive. This is a good little place to get lunch or dinner on a nice, sunny afternoon. It would easily be 4 stars if it were kept a bit more tidy.
(3)Christina J.
Roberto's has the best breakfast burritos on the planet!
(5)Tim M.
With all the great taco places in San Diego county I see no reason to come here other than the view. The carne asada burrito was blah. The chicken burrito was a bit odd. At least the kids meal had jello
(2)Jason W.
The location of this place is what makes it really special but the food is not bad in its own right. I always get the California burrito and have never been disappointed with the quality. Don't expect gourmet, but when you get outside and sit down in the patio you will feel it was worth the trip.
(5)Summer B.
Delicious and cheap are always a good combination especially when its just by the beach. The location is amazing and a great place wether you are eating to go or eating outside. I always get the California burrito. However the Carne Asada and the taquitos are delicious too. I find it very hard to find something that isn't tasty on the menu. I hope for my thigh's sake, it's not because of all the lard. The only downside is that the food isn't that healthy, but what do you expect when eating Mexican food?
(5)Patrick H.
The hash brown breakfast burrito hit the spot this last Saturday morning. I liked their hot and tomatillo sauces as well.
(4)Simeko C.
I love Roberto's they are truly a great San Diego original Taco Shop! I still love the Carne Asada burrito's. They are huge and perfect every time. The Red Salsa is pretty hot so be careful! Yummy!
(4)Seth A.
Great place and great location. Whether your coming back from the beach or from hiking Torrey Pines, this place will satisfy your hunger every time. I recommend getting the breakfast burrito or the carne asada fries. This is the best place to go to by far!
(4)Joel C.
Solid Mexican beach food. My second trip here and now it will become a staple when I visit. Had the asada chips, machaca plate and rolled tacos in my 2 visits. All great not greasy. Super affordable and very friendly. One other comment just don't understand someone who orders a fish burrito and then complains its too fishy?!?! Umm its a fish burrito...
(4)Taylor R.
This place has great food, and I am so glad they are open again after they had to do renovations after the car accident. There food is almost always great, but there have been times when the beans tasted like they were canned. I pretty much only get a California burrito so that is not a problem for me, but it is a little disappointing. The service is usually kind of off as well. I don't mind, but it can get annoying sometimes. Overall I highly suggest coming here,
(4)B P.
This place gets five stars for what it is.. and particularly their California burrito. Great prices, and a great location. I can get a giant burrito for under 6 bucks after tax. It's got a legit laid back and friendly vibe. Love this place after a long day.
(5)Denise K.
I had the carne asada fries here. They were pretty good but I wish the fries were a little crispier. I also wish there was more pico de gallo/ salsa. The best part about this place: THE VIEW IS AMAZING! I guess you can't complain when you're eating carne asada fries outside on a beautiful, sunny day and you can see the ocean crashing off in the distance... Service is fast. And for a hole in the wall, they accept all major credit cards!
(3)Chris R.
Food was cheap, quite tasty. There are better Mexican food joints in Del Mar, but this is one of the best. The food came out fast and I love their Carne Asada Burrito! Whenever I go to the beach, I stop by here.
(4)John D.
Place has the best mexican california burritos! I am sure other food is equally excellent here but Cali is all I ever order. They also have fountain chata soda which is milk and cinnamon, delicious. On top of having excellent food, the seating outside has great views.
(5)Brian B.
Let me start off by saying. I am a fan of Roberto's.. I have lived in San Diego my entire life, have eaten Roberto's mexico food over a million times (slight exaggeration). Generally speaking Roberto's is a clean establishment. good food, and good service.... My usual go-to Roberto's is in Solana Beach and i frequent this location.. So now for the review of the del mar location... THE SERVICE::::: All told i have been to this location 10 times over the years. I haven't been to impressed by the quality. but i would usually consider it a 3 out of 5. Until Today. I met a buddy there for breakfast in the AM. Upon entering i see this rather large girl (white) behind the counter. Snarling at ever customer as they walk up to the counter. She was down right awful. She wouldn't make eye contact, was clearly not having a good day and she was taking it out on EVERY customer. It was so obvious that she was mean that as every one ordered they ran out of there with a look of terror on their face.. Okay, back to the story.. so i ordered my food.. and waited for my friend to order.. She gave him even worse treatment.. he ordered a soft drink and she grabbed the cup and slammed it down in front of him.. Everyone in line jumped back...The funny part was that after people ordered customers were joining together and talking about what a horrible experience it was. It was somewhat of a battered customers meet up group.. THE FOOD::::: I ate the WORST breakfast burrito i have ever had. No flavor, overcooked eggs.. gross.. and my friends burrito had a few HAIRS creeping out of the eggs. I highly suggest going to a different restaurant..
(1)Sara S.
So guys.. this is a taco shop.. obviously its not fancy and obviously it won't have a lengthy menu.. although it has many choices and you can pretty much order what you want and its going to happen.. but if you are just looking for a simple place with fresh mexican food AND a view of the ocean than you have hit the jackpot. This is prime lunch location for locals hence the line at all hours of the day and night :) The review that said this place has 1 vegetarian option is: wrong. Im sorry.. but i have been vegetarian for 22 years and I have been eating at this same place for 17 years and i have NEVER had an issue.. You can tell them what you want and they will put it together... it's never been an issue. Same for vegans.. just remove the queso and crema lol. and.. to the same reviewer who complained about the lack of vege items: why you would go to a taco shop for a "light" option boggles my mind.. so if that's the negative review.. its ridiculous (in my humble opinion of course) ! So really.. i just wanted to say that i love Mexican food and ive had some all over california (and other states) and this little hole in the wall overlooking Torrey Pines is the best place ever.. everything is yummy and fresh and you can sit outside on any sunny day in san diego (which is like.. every day) and have great, cheap but yummy, Mexican food! Cheers!
(5)Mike D.
This place used to be good but now is pathetic. Their breakfast burritos are tiny, like panini style. I'm sure they only use one egg per burrito. Their carne asada burrito comes with just some boiled beef, no guacamole and maybe one little piece of tomato. Pathetic excuse for a taco shop.
(1)Joan S.
This place is located on an amazing spot! You have the beach right near by. During a really nice day, it's a perfect day to sit out and eat mexican food. All the tables are located outside. There are no indoor seating. The interior is really small. There is just enough for about 10 people to squeeze in the area to order something. If you had to wait in a line to order.. then there is only room for maybe 6-7 people to be in there. the beach, nice view, nice air ..what more can you ask for? Well... better food? clean area? The inside isn't clean. Some of the tables are dirty. I had to clean up my own table. As for the food, you order inside and you get your food from the outside window. The food is okay. It's not bad. I ordered the fish burrito (~$5) because they ran out of pollo that day. I actually wanted the pollo asada fries or even a burrito but they ran out. The fish taco was okay. It wasn't the best burrito I have ever tasted. The portion is big but it didn't have a lot of fish in it. I also ordered the horchata drink, which is one of my favorite drinks and it was just okay. It tasted different then the usual horchata drinks that I'm use to. Based on the reviews, I do want to try this place again because the there are some positive reviews. I definitely want to try their pollo asada fries. Hopefully they have it the next time I go.
(2)Paula D.
Rolled taquito's. Excellent with cotija cheeze, guacamole and salsa. Beans, infused with the awesome lardiliciousness. Sitting in the fog watching the lagoon disappear as the fog rolls in, Lovely! Heaven.
(5)Greg W.
Great food, carne asada burrito and rolled tacos are the way to go after surfing
(4)Amanda N.
I've been coming here consistently since a time when I probably had braces. My favorite thing to order on the menu are just their rolled tacos - simple but the best rolled tacos I've had in San Diego. They use cotija cheese - the good stuff - & the guac tastes fresh so I am always happy. Location of this place is very convenient, as you can pick up food to bring to the beach or on your way back. I work around the area also, so I've tried ordering different things off the menu like carne asada fries, while on my lunch break. It just doesn't taste very good 15 minutes cold. My best recommendation is to grab the 5 rolled tacos after a nice day at Del Mar & eat outside.
(4)Justine M.
I went there this evening and there was a line of 20+ out the door. FYI - That is ALWAYS a very good sign of where you should eat. TIP: Standing in the back of this line I pulled them up on my phone and called in my order. I had my burrito in hand and fully enjoyed before the person I was behind had ordered. It's been here for 20+ years, and I'm sure will remain for another 20. Best shop within a dozen miles or more.
(5)Tyler B.
Really good california burritos, food always come out quick, and the sauce they have is really good too! Dont miss out on going here!
(5)Tamar W.
Meh. You know when you walk into a Mexican food place with its own customized labels, to-go boxes, and plastic bags, its probably not the most authentic. This is definitely the feeling you get when you walk into Robertos. The food is fine; the shredded chicken even borderlines being good, but its definitely not on my top 10 list--or my top 50 for that matter. But in a place like San Diego, there is such good, authentic Mexican food, to eat at a place like Robertos seems a shame. The food is boring, overpriced, and just OK.
(2)Jason B.
THIS is definitely the place to hit up after 2-3 hours of exploring trails at Torry Pines. The Woman That I'm Currently Married To and I had no choice but to pull over to get our eat and drink on before hitting the 5. TWTICMT ordered a soft shell fish taco ( yelp.com/biz_photos/VOST… ) and a soft shell carne asada taco ( yelp.com/biz_photos/VOST… ) while I ordered a hash brown burrito. Well, actually, what happened first is I axed what was inside a hash brown burrito (aside from the obvious hash browns). The guy turned, axed the woman next to him and she told me the ingredients which I didn't even listen to. Instead, I told him exactly what I wanted on it. Aside from the hash browns (duh), just bacon, eggs and cheese. Well, I guess the guy didn't like that he now had to push extra buttons so when he did push those extras buttons he did it with extra force. Welcome to my picky world, amigo! While waiting for our food, we noticed that Roberto's was pumping some serious tunes through their outside speakers. No, not banda music, even better - new age music. I tell ya, there's nothing more soothing than listening to whales belching ( yelp.com/biz_photos/WSnt… ) and that incessant dolphin chatter. My hash brown burrito (breakfast burrito # 7 - yelp.com/biz_photos/VOST… ) would have been perfect but most places have a problem with over-cooking the eggs and Roberto's was no different. Despite that, it was still damn good! The soft shell fish and carne asada taco were both fresh and tasted great. TWTICMT said that she actually felt like she was eating something healthy. I know - what the hell does she know? She's actually a pretty smart broad as that dame married me, so there you go. The food was great (for a taco shop) and the surroundings were beautiful. Since we're going to visit Torrey Pines more often before summer hits, I don't think it's a stretch for me to say that visiting Roberto's is on the list of things to do before leaving the area. *Updated on Dec. 4, 2009 - TWTICMT and I stopped here on our way to Torrey Pines. I axed the girl behind the counter if their pollo asado was grilled breast meat and she said yes though it ended up not being. What it did end up being was one of the worst pollo asado burritos I've ever had (Pollo asado burrito with beans and cheese only # 18 - yelp.com/biz_photos/VOST… ). It contained thigh meat that was seasoned with pepper and not grilled (at least for no more than 30 seconds). I'm lucky that TWTICMT didn't cut my genitals off with a spork since she hated the burrito more than I did. One star.*

Hash Brown Burrito the best. Great view.

So many 'Berto's in San Diego, so little time. I don't know what it is about this location, but it is by far my favorite in SD. Maybe it's the scenic surroundings, right off of Torrey Pines. Maybe it's because I tend to come here after long runs and there's nothing like shoveling a machaca burrito in your face after hard exercise. And speaking of the machaca burrito, omigod. Can't get enough of that smokey, beefy goodness. The breakfast burrito with chorizo is also excellent, as is the shrimp burrito. Not much in the way of a salsa bar, unfortunately, but the red and salsa verde here are not bad.

My puppy and I came to Roberto's while waiting for my car repair at Del Mar Car Service. The location is amazing, and so close to one of my favorite beaches. As other reviewers have mentioned, there is only outdoor seating. I was looking forward to finally trying this place because it seemed to be popular. The menu was strikingly minimal, and the prices were just a little more than I expected for typical casual Mexican fare, although I accepted that as a consequence of the prime location and likely higher rent. There was only ONE vegetarian selection on the menu, the "lite" burrito. How anything enclosed in a huge caloric tortilla and filled with rice and beans could be considered "lite" is beyond me. I saw a hashbrown burrito on the menu, so asked if I could just get a taco made with the hash browns. "No" was the answer. They wouldn't do a bean taco either. I was a little annoyed at the lack of flexibility but still hungry so I ordered the burrito. It was just rice, beans, and guacamole; fairly bland, and there was very little guacamole. The hot sauces weren't that tasty and only helped the flavor of the burrito a little bit. I liked the texture and flavor of the rice inside. Although the staff had assured me there was no lard in the beans or tortilla, I am unsure I believe them because they were not friendly to begin with, and I had a stomachache later (I almost never get stomachaches). It would have been nice if they could offer potatoes, nopales, or fajita-style vegetables in a veggie burrito. I don't expect them to be as wonderful and health-conscious as El Zarape or Rancho's, but this IS Southern California, and Del Mar is supposed to be upscale! One of the patrons had stopped to talk to me and pet my dog, and when she didn't hear her order number the first time, the lady at the window actually yelled the number at her. I thought her tone was pretty rude, and unnecessary. In summary: Location: 4.5 Staff: 2 Ambiance: 2 Menu variety: 2 Healthful selections: 1.5 Taste: 2

This place used to be our favorite high school hangout after a day at the beach. I felt nostalgic so we went there. However, it seems like it has taken a turn for the worse. To be fair, the cook looked young, so perhaps he was still in training and we were there on a bad day. This past MLK weekend, we ordered: 1. Carne Asada (way too much pepper and yet still lacking flavor!!!) 2. Chicken Tostada salad (just okay, not as healthy as most salads) 3. Quesadilla (not good, not bad) We were not impressed. I remember this place being the "it" place for TPHS. Are my taste buds more refined now? Or has the restaurant gotten more cocky and sloppy? (oh wait, that sounded bad)... Service was great, lady at the front was really sweet! Also, if you frequent the restaurant, get a frequent visitor's card (free) and for every $50 you spend, you will get $5. :) Maybe the fish tacos are the safer bet. If I give it another chance, I will update my review!

so when i moved to north county the thing i missed the most was having a taco shop on every corner...i still have not come to terms with the small handfull of "mexican" restaurants in my hood....but if i am craving a breakfast burrito or some shredded beef tacos..this is my 1st choice...opposed to Nico's or that other solana beach taco shop.... if you don't have a choice and live up here...this is the better of the few taco shops to go to. or better yet...just drive a bit south. it is always packed...the salsa is good...love the outdoor seating...service is friendly...food is good enough...never had a problem with it....but i work in south bay...enough said
(3)Colleen C.
Have always loved Roberto's. Love the location...love the food...love everything! Never had anything I didn't like there.
(5)Celeste C.
It gets an extra star for the view alone. I probably should have been smart and just gotten something simple like rolled tacos at a place I'd never tried before, but I was feeling bold and went for the fish taco. Big mistake...it tasted like an aquarium. With cabbage. I kept thinking, maybe it was just that bite, let me give it another chance. It wasn't-- I should have quit while I was ahead!
(2)John S.
Okay, if you just gotta eat.... .....for survival.
(2)Nora S.
This is the one and only Roberto's I have ever eaten at. Normally, I wouldn't give a run of the mill taco chain shop 5 stars, but the shrimp burrito here is to die for. The best. I usually like to try different things at a place on different trips, but the shrimp burrito at this Roberto's is so good, it's the only item I ever order. Ever. 5 stars for the shrimp burrito. I can't tell you anything about anything else.

Another day, another desperate realization that there is frickin' NOWHERE to get a decent lunch in the Torrey Pines area of La Jolla...... But wait-- what's that? My coworker tells me there's a decent Mexican joint just up the street on Carmel Valley Rd in Del Mar, right by the beach. Mexican food *AND* views of the waves? I'm sold! So off we go. We get there and Roberto's looks busy! That has to be a good sign. Surprisingly easy parking too on the side streets. Despite the long line, we get to the counter in no time. I order a fish burrito. Nothing fancy, but I wasn't expecting anything fancy for $3.95. I was just expecting something tasty and filling. And you know what? The burrito was absolutely solid! It was more massive than I had predicted, spanning the diameter of the plate. There were lots of fish in there, which were crisp and hot. A generous drench of sauce but not too much. Loved the salsa verde too! Just the right amount of spice there. (I'll admit that Roberto's isn't particularly authentic, despite the "Very Mexican" moniker. But for $3.95, who am I to complain?) I think my coworkers and I have finally found a regular lunch spot, which had been elusive up until now. How have I been missing out on this cheap and convenient deliciousness for so long?
(4)Steve R.
I would give it 5 stars if the service was better. But I don't go to Roberto's to be waited on! I go there for the same reason I came here 25 years ago!!! CARNE ASADA!! still the best in San Diego...now they have added Carne Asada fries! love em! same view as 25 years ago...still loving it!
(4)Michael C.
This place is great. Right on the beach, parking's not too bad (there's some street parking). Food is pretty solid. But it's a fast food mexican place, so don't expect good service.
(4)Melissa K.
This place is a great place to stop for a burrito if you are on your way to/from the beach. REALLY small shop, so order and step aside, but I have to say... probably one of the best bean & cheese burritos at a burrito place in San Diego! Yummy!
(3)Jack C.
Great California burrito, great mini tacos. Watery salsa though. Cashiers are a little too posh.
(4)Terrill P.
The carne asada burrito at this place is incredible. I don't know if it's the guacamole, the carne asada meat, or the absolutely amazing tortilla, but Roberto's is a must stop for anybody driving around the Del Mar/San Diego area. Oh, and it's really cheap too.
(5)Nick V.
Basically there is nothing not to like about this place. This place is basically on the beach with an amazing view, the prices are good, the staff is nice and the food is awesome. When I went, I ordered the Hashbrown Burrito which was amazing and was a great combination of meat and hashbrowns. The salsa they have is also pretty tasty without being too spicy. All in all, a perfect little burrito place when you are not looking for a restaurant with waiters.
(5)Thu M.
So they changed their menu/ownership and no longer have the chicken chimichanga on the menu.. super sad face :( california burrito is really good.. but still reduced to 3 stars due to my mourning over the death of my favorite chimichanga..
(3)Holly W.
this place sucks. I got a carne asada burrito. The meat was horribly seasoned like beef jerky and it was in huge chunks. Hard to eat. The salsa sucked ass too. Huge disappointment !
(1)Kyle T.
GREAT FOOD, GREAT ENVIRONMENT! My friend, and San Diego native brought me to Roberto's Very Mexican Food, and I can't get enough! I have returned several times without him. The rolled tacos, the California Burrito, you name it, I've enjoyed it! The view and outdoor seating make it a real California Treat! The employees are SUPER friendly too! Robertos will be seeing a lot more of me!!
(5)P K.
Yum. Overall, the best taco shop that I've tried around SD so far. The food tastes good, and is worth repeating. Is it far and away better than others I've had? No, but I don't really have any complaints about the food. Location is good. With it being so close to the beach, the outdoor seating lets you feel the coastal breeze. Two downsides: birds and parking isn't the easiest, though I've been lucky the times I've gone there, and got street parking right out front. Price is good. They provide a good value for their price. 3 mini tacos (my regular choice) for 4.25? Yes please! Of the asada, carnitas and chicken tacos, the only one I won't repeat is the chicken. Not that it's bad, but I prefer the other two so much better.

Since we sorely lack good and authentic Mexican on the South Shore of Massachusetts, my target was to eat as much of it as I could on our trip to San Diego. Our last few hours with our rental car brought us to this place somewhat by accident, even though I read the reviews on Yelp and knew it was in the general area. There are no distinguishable landmarks around it so it is a bit hard to find but it is on a main road. Parking can be a bit of a hassle. There are 3 spots in front and all street parking after that. We were able to grab one of the 3 spots but they were so tight and hard to get in and out, it was probably better to find parking on the main road. This is really a taco shack (think clam shack but serving tacos), located by the beach with outdoor seating only. The view is pretty good but the train tracks cut directly in front of the view of the ocean. Menu is centered around burritos and tacos which was just what I wanted. We each ordered a carnitas and fish taco, and grabbed a table outside. Our order was ready within 5 minutes and we were ready to eat. Each taco was individually wrapped and came with a slice of lime. Small containers of different salsas were available for the taking. Just grab what you need from the bucket on the ordering counter. The tacos were surprisingly larger than expected. The fish taco was divine -- deep fried, crispy and moist fish with the conventional cabbage slaw and a dab of very light dressing. The carnitas taco was excellent too -- simple and thank goodness, not drenched in cheese and sauces like they love to do in some places. They were so good, we ended up ordering two more. One more fish for me (although I was pretty full already!) and a carne asada for my husband, who found it too salty. Best of all were the prices. I think it was about $2.15 each for the carnitas and carne asada, and about $2.60 for a fish taco. Now that is good eating. I am missing this place already.
(4)Melissa I.
Fun little mexican spot. There is great outdoor seating overlooking Torrey Pines. The menu is typical, service is quick. I had the rolled tacos which were really taquitos. They were good, not amazing, but yummy!!
(4)Jay D.
Heed Joseph M's advice; you can find me here early on a weekend morning if I happen to go for a run with pals on the coolio Torrey Pines trails - on my better days. If you're for the food like breakfast, I'd say avoid the lines and go here early in the day, but you're still competing with surfers and overachieving folks that run, surf, and cycle. If you're here for dinner, good luck: coastal San Diego is on a grub hunt. If you're here for the sunset, forgo the food. It's the lesser of two evils, less lines or more lines, but it's still a line.
(4)Rachelle J.
I first came here with my mom a few years ago & I've been recommending it/ going back ever since. The food is typical, good taco shop food, but the atmosphere & location makes it worth going to. Settled right along the coast of Del Mar, you can feel the fresh ocean breeze and beautiful unoccupied ocean scenery just in front of you (while enjoying the comfort of tasty Mexican food)! So if Del Mar Beach is on your "To Visit" list, make a stop here, I'm sure you won't regret it.

WORST TACO SHOP IN SAN DIEGO COUNTY. usually food is poor/fair, small portions even for relatively low prices. 3rd time at this taco shop, but this instance made me blow my lid: got my cold food and refuse to eat it because this place is a s*** hole. The line is always astronomical so, I called in my order. Got there and paid 15 minutes after i called. I saw my food get put on the counter about 30 minutes after i paid (45 min after making order). no number was called... nothing, so i ask if it was my order and the response was no. another 30 min later i ask for my money back because the wait was too long and i had to get back to work. they refuse a refund because after being told the now cold food on the counter was not my order by the very incompetent employee, apparently once your food is made they wont give refunds. I didnt even want my food, just my money back. BEING A LOCAL SAN DIEGAN AND ONE THAT WORKS WITHIN 5 MIN OF THIS AWFUL ESTABLISHMENT: I WILL NEVER GO AGAIN
(1)Ana M.
This is one of the worst taco shops in San Diego. They shouldn't even be called Roberto's (the best one is on Broadway in Chula Vista). I ordered my food and the cashier was totally short with me. I moved aside and found a table outside. The food I ordered came and my son was pleased with his bean burrito. I ordered a carne asada torta which I immediately regretted once I saw everyone in the place eating a burrito. I unwrapped my meal and the bread looked like it was coming apart on one side and rock hard on the other. i ended up having to eat the inside of my meal with a fork. it was not flavorful at all. I walked back inside of the shop to ask the cashier for a brown bag to pack up my son's leftovers and she was on a personal call. She looked my way, continued to talk and ignored me. The guy cleaning tables had to come in and grab me a bag. HORRIBLE service, mediocre food. Not impressive.

"Meh" Came here for lunch one day and was annoyed and happy to see a line out the door. Sure, we didn't want to have to *wait* for our food, but a line often means impending tastiness. I was a little disappointed. The first thing that caught me was the fact that they claim that they're food is "Very Mexican", and yet smothered with sour cream. Sour cream, though delcious, is an American bastardization of true Mexican food. -1 star. Not to continue with the sour cream, but it sorta ruined the burrito for me. There was SO MUCH of it I completely forgot that there was, carne asada, I think? Some fries? When I remembered them I realized that they were very delicious, but I had to tell the sour cream to knock off it's shenanigans and stop hogging the spotlight. We were happy to be able to find seating, even though it appears the types who frequent this place are big on ugly ties and bluetooth headsets. I really don't CARE that you can't believe how your receptionist spoke to you this morning - she's probably at a Mexican food restaurant who puts guac in their burritos, not loads of white stuff. Lucky bitch. So yes, I will no be coming back. A far stretch from terrible, but still a far cry from fantastic.
(2)David J.
So yummy California burritos.
(5)Joshua M.
I stopped in a second time and had a bean and cheese burrito, and man after hiking the Torrey Pines trails all I could think about was completely destroying the progress I made by exercising. This Roberto's has you covered for that!
(4)Ben Y.
Meh. I expected more from a place that claims to be *very* Mexican. I could be way out of line with this review, because I've only eaten here once, and only had one thing... I will likely be back soon to try something else. I had the CA burrito (I know, hardly Mexican, maybe that's why it was mediocre). It was OK. I ate it all (almost). My gripe is that it was seriously 50% tortilla, 25% sour cream, and then 10% carne asada, 10% fries, and 5% cheese. That's just not right! All the constituent parts were pretty good (aside from the excess of sour cream), but it just did not come together well. If I were to order it again, I'd ask for no sour cream, and maybe some guacamole instead. And then I'd just pray that they put a little more filling in. Seriously, I've never had such a tortilla-rich burrito. Next time? I'm tryin' me some tacos!
(2)Garrett P.
California burrito no, wait Chorizo burrito no, wait Hash brown burrito with beans! This is the typical conundrum I face whenever my coworker asks me if I want to swing by Roberto's with him. So much good food in such a little restaurant, located conveniently near the beach. It's always packed, and the two of us usually end up walking away with 4 or 5 burritos because neither of us can make up our minds. Overall the grub is pretty good for being near my work. Sure, there are better Mexican places in San Diego, and sure, there are more authentic places, but Roberto's will satisfy your needs when you get the hankering for a quick burrito.
(3)sitara s.
Blah. That's the one word for their good. Had the hash brown burrito for breakfast and it was quit bad. I hate when burritos are made with all the ingredients put separately. First I could only taste the egg and then halfway through the cheese and then towards the end the hash brown. The only reason for 2 stars is the nice location.
(2)Louis R.
I'm a very disappointed formerly satisfied Roberto's Del Mar customer from way back. Would mostly order carne or pollo asada burritos which used to be pretty good. Then one day a few months back ordered the pollo asada to go and instead received a SUPER oily and bland chicken filled grease tube. It was bad. Has anyone else had experiences like this in recent months? I've been afraid to go back and try again, but I do miss that nice setting by the preserve after a nice hike.
(1)Kathy B.
I have eaten here a lot, each time I visit my daughter in San Diego. I love this food especially the California burrito!!!
(5)Brian S.
It's a dive but the food and location are very good. The carne asada fries are good, as was the Machacha (steak and scrambled eggs). Yes, only small amounts of green or red sauce in cups; so room to improve. But its quick and a good value; perfect to grab and take to the beach.
(4)Linda P.
Great Mexican food and the prices are unbelievable!
(5)Anthony E.
Pricey for mexican food but I could understand why.....LOCATION!!! Great views and close to Torrey Pines Beach & Reserve. It's all patio seating for the most part and they have the hot sauce already prepared for you which is convenient.
(4)Teej T.
I love that in the middle of super bourgeois Del mar there is a little hut that says "Roberto's VERY Mexican food.' I was intrigued enough by the Very inserted into that sentence, and I found that the claim wasn't too pompous. Roberto's affords gorgeous sunset vistas of the area while at the same time making you feel right at home in the non-stuffy, scenic atmosphere. The tortillas are deliciously fresh, the ingredients top notch. When I'm stuck in Del Mar, I'm gonna look for you again, 'Bertos.
(4)Jennifer L.
This place is alright. It's super convenient because it's on the way to the beach and a great place to stop by to get goodies, but the service is shitty and slow. Like it's Mexican food!! A burrito should not take 20 minutes to make! But anyways, the prices are average like $4.50 for an enchilada $6 for carne asada fries, etc. etc. The food is okay at best and there is very limited seating.
(3)Summer B.
I give this place five stars for a taco shop I frequent her a lot and I tried other taco shops in the area including Solana Beach and Encinitas. None of them beat this Robertos. This is the perfect place to solace that Mexican food craving, they will make the food how you like it with out bating a eye, the place is always clean considering they are always busy, the service is professional and friendly. Very child friendly and lots of families stop here, nice outdoor seating with a view.
(5)m. Ted B.
Roberto's USED to be great! Went the corporate route and now fish tacos are twice as expensive as what they used to be and the fish is a lot smaller. I can go to a sit down Mexican place for the same price essentially. It's just not what it used to be.
(2)Austin P.
This place is legend. There isn't anything better than a California burrito from Roberto's after a day at the beach! Remember to pile on the salsa.
(4)Diana E.
This is the only fast-food Mexican joint in the area - so I don't have much of a choice. And I can't really compare it to other "authentic" Mexican restaurants I grew up around (National City, Chula Vista) - it just wouldn't be fair. But this place is good, if you're feeling like having Mexican food and your stuck in the Del Mar/Torrey Pines area. I wish they had Ceviche. Maybe they do, but it's not listed on the menu.
(3)Art L.
Went when visiting in the area. Friends living blocks away go for breakfast burritos, and we loved the hash-brown burrito. They make the hash browns really crunchy and that's the way I like them. For lunch, the food was OK, not bad, not great, but good workman-like AmMex food. But as they say in about the three most important things for a successful restaurant -- location, location, location. The lagoon, the sounds, smells and breezes from the ocean, the Torrey Pine cliffs -- it's hard to realize just how much urbanity you're surrounded by. This is not far from the freeway, there's a big office area just across the freeway, and this seems to be a very popular spot for people to get a bit of takeout and then drive a couple of blocks to park looking out at the Pacific and eat in their cars/trucks. Be warned.
(3)Benito D.
Mexican places in San Diego don't need slogans ie "Very Mexican Food." Seriously, have you ever seen a Mexican place in San Diego close no matter how bad the place? Nope. So to me, a slogan HAS TO BE making up for something. And for Robertos in Del Mar it's the completely average Mexican food. It does have a great view of the Torrey Pines Wetlands, so if you're in Del Mar and need a burrito, this isn't a terrible place to do it. Oh and for ANYONE, EVER mentioning Chipotle in a San Diego mexican food review, your Burrito Pass has been revoked. Chipotle was founded in Denver and McDonalds had a majority share.
(3)Mr K.
This place seems to be small but it gained a huge customer support there:) they are really good in making some worlds best burritos :)
(5)Jen C.
This place was really busy when I went on a Saturday afternoon after hiking at Torrey Pines State Reserve. I think there were 8 groups of people in line ahead of us. We managed to get a table, and our wait was only about 10 minutes. Anyway, we got the rolled tacos, the carne asada burrito, the California burrito, the cinnamon chips, and the fish taco. The fish taco was extremely flavorful-- the fish was well prepared (nice and crispy on the outside, soft on the inside), and the carne asada burrito was good-- it was loaded with guacamole, which offset the dryness of the meat. The California burrito was a little dry for my taste (it had carne asada, cheese, and potatoes), and the cinnamon chips were just okay. The guacamole was really good. Anyway, if you REALLY want good Mexican food, you should go to the Inland Empire, because let's be honest-- you have to go to where all the Mexicans live, and not many can afford SD.
(3)Likes J.
After eating the sun for a few hours at the beach this burnt taco shop is a great place to complement your ocean water cocktail post-surfing (or swimming...or hanging out in the shallow water in my case). Freshly prepared and well below the Hamilton Threshold, the tacos are overstuffed and served with spicy sauces to suit hot heads or tongueless diners. Eat up!
(5)Penny L.
First time visit today. Ordered a California burrito. The first bite: meat and guacamole. The Nth bite: MORE meat and guacamole. WHERE THE HECK ARE THE FRIES AND SOUR CREAM? Brought the burrito back to the counter and the woman was like...."yeah this doesn't look like Califronia burrito. But you ate most of it so I cant tell." Dammit I kept eating cuz I was hoping to bite into some fries you retard. AND SHE DID NOTHING ABOUT IT. Didn't even offer a word of apology. I'll NEVER come back again.
(1)Jeff D.
I love tasty mexican food places that put out a ridiculously large amount of food in relation to their kitchen. I love views of the ocean. This is a mexican tasty food place with a view of the ocean. 'nuff said
(4)Richard H.
Average Mexican food. Average price. Nothing truly special about this place. Its pretty much a shack on the side of the road. Parking can be difficult to find. When we were there, my girlfriend, friend at the time, took us there. She said it had decent mexican food. I would think, though that being so close to the boarder, the food would be better. I got the crunchy tacos so if you're looking for authentic mexican food that will blow your mind away, this isn't the place to go.
(3)trina e.
Went here for the first time last night with some peeps from work. I ordered a carnitas soft taco and an orange fanta Very authentic tasting as the carnitas were very flavorful. GOOD! My coworkers had other varieties of tacos and everyone seemed to be satisfied. Another benefit of eating here is the amazing view of Torrey Pines and a cool ocean breeze. The food was so good that I called home to see if I could round up an order to go...I ordered a Carne Asada burrito and an order of "Rolled Tacos" (aka Taquitos) and when I got home, the burrito was correct but the rolled tacos turned out to be triangular cut Nachos with a heaping serving of guacamole...wrong, but Yum! Nonetheless, the food is awesome and the atmosphere is very cool...
(4)Rosie G.
This place used to be really good!! I love the rolled tacos, I got them again however this time they were lacking, hardly any meat and i don't think they were fried long enough I think it maybe the summer crowd.. My friend got a chicken Quesadilla- you'd think.. chicken and cheese.. Nooo- they put this nasty wet sauce on it and these huge bell peppers and the whole thing is just a nasty wet mess.. My husbands taco's that we had the last time we were there was also quite wet so I asked for no sauce and it was much better... It seems like a hit or miss kinda place.. I recommend going in the winter when they are not soo busy.
(2)Sue Z.
Pretty good tostada (think Taco salad) & fresh burritos..yes, actually FRESH. Chips are kind of stale though. This cute little taco shop gets really busy - the line is always out the door! I guess that's not saying much though since the place is literally the size of a van..haha. All seating is outdoors, so it might get windy but the location is perfect. Right next to Torrey Pines state beach, so you can go walk off all those california burrito calories at the beach. A step up from the classic, drunken trips to the 24 hr greasy Roberto's on Miramar.
(3)Paula N.
Best Roberto's of them all! Where else can you get lunch for $5 AND be next to the ocean? Come here after a walk on Torrey Pines or a day surfing and you'll make up for any calories lost. Worth a 10-15 minute drive if you've got a hunkering for Mexican.
(4)Mr. S.
Born and raised in Del Mar...live in the Bay Area. Nothing up here compares to Robertos. Especially this location. Anything fried is to die for, unfortunately, probably literally. So...if you go frequently, the burritos and fish tacos [only partially fried] are delovely. Just to mix it up, try the Solana Beach location and make the short walk to Tide Park beach, Boogey Board under arm. San Francisco, take that.
(5)Christine A.
It is my boyfriend and I's normal routine to come here every Saturday morning for their hash brown burrito. MMMMMMM YUMMY! Put all your favorite breakfast foods (hash browns, eggs, sausage, ham, cheese, bacon, you know you love that ish), mix em up, and throw em into a burrito....sooooo good. On Saturday mornings this place is PACKED......since it's right by the Del Mar beach and Carmel Valley is a popular road for cyclists/runners, there's always a lot of people stopping in for their post-run bite or just to satisfy their hangover. It is so relaxing to sit out on their outside seating, take in the sun, enjoy the view, read the paper and dive into a humongous burrito. Not expensive either. Attracts all kinds of people -- surfers, families, businessmen, you name it. No public restroom FYI. Their carne asada burrito is also very good, if for some reason I'm not in the mood for their hashbrown, I'll get their carne asada :)

My question has been answered - the "less corporate" looking Roberto's are now "Rigoberto's" - everything is pretty much the same though. Out.

Good burritos, shitty quesadillas. Try one if you like your quasadillas lumpy and enjoy meat juice dripping out of the middle after taking one bite. Blech

I live in Arizona but have managed to hit this Robertos about ten times in the past 20 years. It's essentially right on the ocean, so the breeze and view are wonderful. And the food's fantastic--fresh ingredients, great carne asada and unique finely-shredded cheese on the tacos. Great salsa, great guac, great chips. There are places closer to home where I can get takeout nearly as good, and if I close my eyes while I eat I can imagine I'm at THE 'Bertos listening to the surf roll in.

Awesome. Simply one of the coolest things to do before or hanging at the beach at Torrey Pines, or getting on your bike to go back up the hill. Dig the carnitas. Parking can be a challenge, and the birds can be... insistent. But the experience is great. Would that they served some Mexican beer, or pretty much any kind of beer.
(4)Matt V.
Yummy! Do they ship to SF? Mexican food in SF sucks. I like to go here when I visit...it's yummy

true story: "hi can i get four bean, cheese and rice tacos?" "no we don't make those." "i get them every single time i order." "no, only burritos like that. it's too busy." "ok, then i guess i have to go to another robertos" "ok BYE." click i had to call back, ask for the manager, and order bean, cheese and rice tacos from him. he was like maybe she misunderstood you. and i was like no she understood me a. because she responded in a way that indicated she understood me and b. because i heard her repeat it in spanish and i speak spanish. bitches. good thing you're close to my house or i'd never go there again.

I have been coming here since I was 6. It hasn't changed. It's a great place to pick up some mexican food, just watch out for the long lines / waiting times, typically on weekdays at lunch and weekends that are sunny and warm. The view is great, but even better from up the hill on Camino Del Mar. It can be windy, and personally I don't like trying to keep my burrito and hot sauce from flying away, so I don't sit down and eat here too much -- l usually pick it up. There is also very limited parking. They have really tasty carne asada burritos, chicken burritos (with stewed chicken, onions, peppers), carnitas burritos are excellent, and breakfast burritos aren't bad. They have great hot sauce. They are also pretty cheap, which is always a plus.

I love Roberto's. I've been coming here for years with family & friends. Although it isn't the best mexican food I've ever had, it's still good for what you pay for. It's a great place to go after spending time at Torrey Pines beach.
(5)Rebecca H.
Roberto's is the place to go if you are in need of serious comfort food and a (not so) healthy dose of chips and guacamole. The carne asada is so freaking good it's hard to describe. And the prices... where else can you get a large burrito with all the fixings for under $5? Even their plain bean burritos are mouthwatering. Damn, now I'm hungry again....
(4)Anita L.
The burritos are huge. The only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars is that I'd rather had Chipotle.
(4)Annie P.
Love Roberto's. Always stop for lunch on the way in to Del Mar on the trip down from LA. Great food. And really good prices. Only problem is there isn't much seating and the competition to get seats that open up is pretty intense. We always just get it to go and then eat it at the beach or at the house. Great quick Mexican food!
(4)Michael P.
Killer location, average food. Every time I get the carne I hope it will be good, but it is the same bland stuff they always serve. I do think that their shrimp tacos are excellent and the fish tacos are pretty good. It's also nice to wash it all down with Horchata. Always came here after golfing at Torrey Pines, so it holds a special place in my heart.
(3)Lauren C.
I like Robertos' because a) it's always consistent, b) it's delicious and c) it's right by the beach. There's nothing better than enjoying your burrito while watching the beach sunset.
(4)Josh C.
This place is awesome. Burritos are good, it's right by the ocean - and scenery is gorgeous. Parking lot is really small.
(4)Carrie O.
Roberto's has really yummy food. REALLY yummy. I'm still thinking about the burrito I had there yesterday, and kinda wishing I had one right now (even though I'm full). I had the chicken burrito, which was stewed chicken with stewed chiles and onions. Delicious! A huge mess, but totally worth it. My husband had the carne asada burrito and said it was very well spiced. The guac on his burrito was quite good too. There's a self-serve horchata machine at this place, too, which rocks (but is dangerous for us, ha). I love that they have a nice patio which has a great view of the marsh, and that we can easily bring our dog with us (after a romp on the beach in Del Mar) and eat out there. We'll definitely be back!
(4)Regina W.
So I admit the food is greasy, but it's so good and cheap. My favorite item on the menu is the el pastor burrito, which is not available at many Mexican restaurants. Even better, it's a beautiful drive from La Jolla and it's a great place to eat outside on a nice day.
(4)Shawn B.
This isn't a proper review as I always get the same thing - breakfast burrito with ham and potatoes. Delicious!
(4)Jeff W.
I use this place as a reward for running the hills at Torrey Pines. I park near Roberto's and then run the hill and trails in Torrey. My treat for my hard work is a nice big burrito! Nothing better than sitting outside and enjoying one of the best views in San Diego!
(4)Joseph H.
Great place to put the calories back on after a long run at Torrey pines state beach..not the best burritos ever... But some reviewers are just complainers.. Take it for what it is..
(4)ROEL X.
Um, hello, does it get any better than this? I live in Seattle area and every time we hit SD, the first place we like to eat is Roberto's in Del Mar. Great prices, AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME food and the scenery while you eat is just gorgeous. The Carne Asada tacos and burritos paired with the cheese nachos are the BEST. I'm talking about I-dream-of-the-tacos-and-wake-up-salivating-kind-Âof-good. We always stay about 8 days in SD on our vacays and end up at the DM Roberto's at least 3-4 times. Can't wait to go back! Best tip - Stick to the locations that they show on the menu. The one in PB and OB are total knock offs and kind of on the gross side.
(5)Mark S.
The California Burrito is great as long as you ask them to substitute guacamole for sour cream.
(4)Phil A.
I generally enjoy this Roberto's location, the view etc. But as they say, "you can't eat the view". I just tried a new item, a caesar salad burrito, with chicken. Well, it was so bad (chicken was fatty, dark meat, awful taste) that I asked the manager to take it back and replace it with another item. To my surprise, the manager stated that they would't or couldn't. So sorry. Well, that is not acceptable for any restaurant and its a very poor business practice. I am a long time customer of this particular Robertos location and I will not be returning.
(3)Jake B.
I LOVE their food and their prices...the machaca breakfast burrito is an excellent cure for whatever poison you drank on a Saturday night. But people, be warned...this is not starbucks or taco bell, there is no corporate consistency here. This place is so laid back that one day you'll be charged $3.00 for the plate that comes with chips and beans...and the very next day, when you order the same thing, it costs $3.28 or $2.76 and comes with rice and lettuce instead...just ask nicely and they will make you want you want every time!
(4)Diana P.
Running errands in the area and my hubby wanted some quick Mexican food. Its been a few years, but figured that it would fit the bill. He ordered the carnitas plate and I ordered the fish burrito. We will not be back. The carnitas plate was unflavorful and the fish burrito was downright nasty.
(2)Errin S.
Decent food, nice patio, great for groups. There was a line out the door when we arrived, but it went quickly, and it didn't take too long to get my food.
(3)Mel C.
This is the closest place to satisfy my craving for greasy Mexican food when I'm at work. If you fax in your order, I think there is a little discount. I've tried the machaca burrito and the fish burrito - both were yummy. I just wish that they had a salsa bar.
(4)Taylor S.
Solana Beach Roberto's is WAY better. More sour cream, more flavor, better tasting!
(3)Andrew E.
Rushed staff and a cold burrito with unmelted cheese made for a really poor experience. Carne Asada was dry but had decent flavor. Overpriced (as well as the rest of our group) and they have a notice stating hat their prices will be going up.
(2)Rooster R.
Well I was very disappointed to say the least. We get there and I was happy to see the amount of people there. I'm thinking this place has to be good if so many people are there. NOT! I would classify this place as one of the worst Mexican fast food restaurants I've ever gone to. The food was horrible and cold. The few bites we had before tossing the plates in the trash where bland. We went there after reading the great reviews here and I'm never going back.
(1)Nicole C.
Tasty tacos and burritos while overlooking great landscape. There isn't much more you can ask for on a sunny southern California day. The food here is still good if you have to make it take-out, but if you have the time enjoy the view.
(5)Jared R.
Good food, sometimes they over cook the carne asada because its all pre-cooked and just warmed up when ordered. NOT as good as Lolitas in Claremont Mesa, but still very good,
(4)Srinivas R.
If there was Mexican food in heaven then it would probably be from Roberto's. Roshni R, my old roommate took me here a few years back and I had completely forgotten about it till I drove by the other day. Cheap, delicious Mexican food by the beach. Tough to beat.
(4)David K.
Come by on a sunny, perfect beach-weather day on a weekend and you'll quickly see that I'm not the only one who loves this place. It's not dirt cheap, but the food is well worth the price. Tack on the awesome location (view of the ocean and a short walk away from Torrey Pines state beach) and you have a great, almost no-nonsense dining experience. The only (slight) issue is parking on a busy day. Hey, the walk (a few blocks at the very most) is worth it. The staff is friendly and the selection is pretty good. I'd say the most blatant omission is a lack of pollo asado, but there are chicken selections. I basically come here for the carnitas anyway. Best carnitas this side of the border.
(5)Liza H.
Tasty & low budget Mexican food with a stunning view of the sea. Fine carne asada and fish tacos, but the horchata tasted synthetic. Take home message: cheap, nice view, tasty. What's not to dig?
(4)Cliff M.
Go play Torrey Pines Golf Course... take a swim in the ocean at the state beach at the bottom of the hill... and then head over to Roberto's for a mouthwatering carne asada burrito. You will have had a pretty good day.
(5)Mexikanisches Essen mit tollem Blick auf Del Mar's wetland. Nur ein paar Minuten entfernt von Torrey Pines, einem super Surfspot, also klasse fuer lunch/dinner beim Surfen.
(4)Kristina H.
This place has terrific burritos and the chile relleno was great too, I have had a very greasy taco here, I think it was a tehir crispy shelled taco, but most things are not very greasy at all, if you get the soft tortillas. I have to disagree with Mr. S who says nothing in the Bay area compares to this place. For me a great Mexican place has good salsa and for some reason Roberto's doesn't and the salsa they do have is only available in very small containers, therefore only 4 stars. Check out elgrullensegrill.com in the Bay area for great salsa and Mexican food in general

Four words - CARNE ASADA FRENCH FRIES. I think I have found my Mecca.
(5)Kathleen M.
The BEST Roberto's location! Mmm...I'm dreaming of a carne asada quesadilla with guacamole right now! So delicious, so cheap! This is the best taco stand I have ever been to! You may have to line up, but it's worth the wait. Be sure to eat there on their nice patio, or just head around the corner and have lunch on nearby Torrey Pines beach.

Robert has been busy multiplying as there seems to be a Roberto's everywhere, well at least in North County. Okay so I'm exaggerating a bit as there are actually only four locations up here and one in Ontario, CA....Rubios watch out. Roberto's is a family-owned authentic Mexican fast food... but a very good one for that matter. They are all a bit different in appearance but hey variety is the spice of life. This one blends in with the scenery and they still makes an awesome Carne Asada Burrito their most popular dish. In fact Roberto actually introduced this burrito to San Diegans back when he first opened up his taco shop in 1964. Although Roberto is not with us anymore, his energy certainly lives on. Other locations include Solana Beach, Encinitas, Leucadia and as I mentioned Ontario. Enjoy! robertos.us

The food here is awesome, the burritos, tacos, tostadas, combination plates, taquitos etc are all great. Some of the taco's may be on the greasy side but i like them that way. Also the location is amazing which is right next to Torrey Pines state beach. Also during peak hours and weekends be sure to order in if you don't want to wait because sometimes the wait can be 10-15 minutes long depending on the time and the number of people there.

I used to have friends in "of the Sea", and the only thing I really liked about the area were my friends, surfing off of the TP Bluffs, and Roberto's. There is nothing more satisfying than a Carne Asada Qdilla after an afternoon in the water. Always a nice view, and comfortable breeze to go with some mexican grub.
(4)Yi C.
It's a great place for cheap good Mexican food and is right next to the ocean! I'd recommend it for lunches or after hanging out at the beach. Nothing hits the spot like eating a carne asada burrito after a good surf.
(4)Dan P.
I really like this Robertos because of the location. It's close to the beach and fairly close to UCSD, but not in an area populated with a bunch of other businesses. The food here is generally good. Compared to similar places, it's about average, maybe slightly above for most San Diego taco shops. Refillable horchata is a plus. I have fond memories of getting food here and parking on the street with spots that face the beach to eat my burrito. All of the seating is outdoors and it's really nice with the gorgeous San Diego weather. The building itself is a bit small and hard to fit all the people that come here during lunch time. Parking next to the place can sometimes be a hassle since it can get crowded during lunch hours. Come a little bit after the rush and it's all good. Prices are good, about what you'd expect for a San Diego taco shop. Given the most excellent location, the value here is awesome.
(4)Dr J.
You can't go wrong with any SD Roberto's for fast Mexican food. Taquitos, burritos, fish tacos, tostadas, it's all good. This Roberto's is in an amazing location overlooking the beach where Torrey Pines and Del Mar meet. Parking is sparse but worth the effort.

Great fish tacos. Great view.
